President's Message
Words that come to mind when I think of November are gratitude, appreciation, and enjoying time with friends and family. There are things happening in our world that can be distressing, so I try to think about the positive I have in my life and remain grateful. Our family has a tradition of sharing what we are thankful for before we eat Thanksgiving dinner. In addition, each year in our family Christmas letter, I insert a sheet titled, “Blessings” where I bullet point the year’s events that we were grateful to experience.
We certainly appreciate Tierrasanta Village, and I believe it’s important we create a culture of gratitude within our Village. It involves showing appreciation for what we have. Thom and I are grateful for the many opportunities to socially connect with others. I try to make it a point to thank our supporting partners when they speak to our members or when I reach out to them for advice. I often acknowledge the dedication of our Board of Directors, Cassandra, and certainly appreciate all of you who volunteer and participate.
This is the time of year when our Board of Directors begins to plan our budget for the next year. I appreciate the dedication and knowledge of the members working on this time-consuming yet vital work. The Board members will be participating in our annual all-day retreat on November 13 where we will spend part of the time updating our strategic plan, focusing on our Mission and the interests and needs of our members.
We are about to embark on our Annual Donor Drive. You will be receiving information via email as well as a letter in the mail. It is because of generous members like you that TVSD can deliver an extensive number of services, programs and events each year. As we grow the membership, and our costs continue to increase, the ongoing support of our members will assure we remain viable.
I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving!

| Annual Donor Drive Launches
This year has been a busy year full of activities, events and educational opportunities. Your Board of Directors and Committees have been focused on offering programming that responds to the many needs and wishes of our members. As we have increased the number of events, and in tandem with inflation, our costs have been increasing. Thankfully, we have wonderful Supporting Partners and some grant funding to help meet our needs.
We are embarking on a new chapter with Tierrasanta Village as we seek to hire a new part-time Volunteer Coordinator and begin working on a well-thought-out Member Services Implementation Plan. This will take time and resources, but will be vital to our mission of supporting the health and well-being of our members as we age in our own homes in the community we love.
This is the time of year we reach out and ask those of you who can contribute to our Annual Year End Appeal. This helps us minimize how much we draw down our savings to fund our annual expenses. This year’s goal is $15,000. It is the same as the last few years’ successful donor drives.
The following are ways to donate:
1. Send a check to the TVSD mailing address (10601 Tierrasanta Blvd. #G-405, San Diego, CA 92124).
2. Deliver a check to the clubhouse during our operating hours (M/W/F 9:30 am - 12:30 pm).
Using a check is ideal as TVSD receives 100% of the total of your check versus the 3% we pay when a credit card is used.
3. If you prefer a website donation using a credit card, please click here.
When deciding about a donation, please take time to reflect on the reasons you are committed to the Village and why it matters to you. You and your contributions of time, talent, and treasure are so important to TVSD! We are a vibrant and growing community. Please help us continue supporting our community’s seniors well into the future.

Reminder: It's Medicare Annual Enrollment time and there are lots of changes to understand. If you have any questions, TVSD Supporting Partner is happy to help guide you.
| Tierrasanta Village Time Bank
There is something special about a Time Bank exchange. We are actively providing a way to enable and empower each other, to know that we matter, and feel valued when we are called on to use one of our talents: I can drive in the dark; you can hang pictures straight; I can bake cookies for your grandkid's party; you can teach me a few tricks on the ukulele. Not barter, not "help", but sharing!
We encourage all TVSD members to be a part of Time Bank. Watch for an announcement of a gathering to discuss ways to make HourWorld easier for Time Bankers. And if your talents include computer ease, the Time Bank Committee needs YOU!

Sleep Apnea - The Sequel
This month’s Care Committee Corner is a sequel to last month’s article about sleep apnea. Since last month, the author-me!- has participated in a home sleep study test. It was pretty interesting. I’d like to share a bit about it, what my physician’s assistant said, and then an interesting AI overview you can check out for yourself about one remedy for sleep apnea symptoms. I’ll preface this by saying, as always, that you should not take anything in a Care Committee Corner as medical advice, since your Care Committee isn’t a group of physicians. Always check with your own doctor when you see something here that may apply to you.
During my last annual physical, I requested a sleep study. I know I snore, and have on occasion awakened myself because of snoring. I have a family member with sleep apnea and it’s been on my mind. The physician’s assistant agreed to order a sleep study, and I was told it would be either in a clinic, or at home. Many weeks later I received a call advising me that a home sleep study had been approved and a device would be sent to me. I got the device by mail a few days later. The directions were simple. Download the app to my phone, create an account, and that night, place the digital device on my wrist and press the power button. The device synched with my phone, and I pressed the start button. My phone recorded my 6.5 hours of sleep, and when I pressed “stop” on the app upon awakening, the results were submitted. Two days later I received 7 pages of results, which were also sent to the physician’s assistant. The results included a cover letter, key metric measurements-types of sleep(light, deep, REM), heart rate, oxygen levels, snoring, body position, and apneas (stopping breathing). I was relieved to see that I “tested negative”, without significant sleep apnea. However, the results overview did mention, and my research for last month’s article also mentioned, that home sleep apnea tests do not definitively rule out obstructive sleep apnea. The test analysts recommend a repeat home test or a test in a sleep clinic.
So, what did the physician’s assistant say after all this? That the results were “inconclusive”, and that the best remedy for me is to lose weight. I wasn’t surprised, as I do need to lose weight for many reasons, and being overweight is a contributing factor for sleep apnea. One of our wonderful and generous Village members sent me information about something that has worked well for them in reducing not only their weight, but sleep apnea. It is weight loss medication. An internet search for “Will Medicare cover weight loss medication for sleep apnea?” provides an AI overview and several articles that indicate that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved tirzepatide, marketed as Zepbound, for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.*. If you’d like to check this out, please first check with your doctor.

Ice Cream Social
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out at the ice cream social. There was a large turnout with members enjoying a great time with friends. A special shout out to member Linda Byrd for organizing this fun event! | | | Decluttering Workshops
Are you overwhelmed with too much stuff? Do you wish to relieve your heirs of some of the burden of disposition of your stuff when you are gone? Do you wish your belongings were more in harmony with your current lifestyle? Do you crave a simpler cleaning routine? Join the TVSD Care Committee for decluttering workshops to learn how to best declutter your spaces! Remaining workshop dates are 11/7 and 12/5. Each workshop is scheduled 1:00-2:30 p.m. | | | Reminder: Use Raise Right This Holiday Season
Many village members have already become Raise Right users, helping TVSD to bring in $700 in fundraising to date in 2025. The Raise Right platform allows users to purchase gift cards for popular stores and attractions while "giving back" a portion of sales to TVSD. If you have not yet signed up for Raise Right, please consider learning more. All the details are available here. You can also contact the Village Front Desk for more information. Thank you for your continued support of Tierrasanta Village! | | | Elderhelp Holiday Angels
This holiday season Tierrasanta Village will again be taking part in the Elderhelp Holiday Angel giving campaign, delivering $25 Target and Walmart gift cards to local seniors. The TVSD Community Outreach team had a great idea: to use Raise Right to purchase all of the gift cards, so that the gifting campaign will double as a fundraiser for our village. So, if you have a Raise Right account, please purchase your donated gift card through this venue.
If you do not have a Raise Right account and do not want to set one up, the Community Outreach team Sheila Weiner (sheilaweiner@att.net) and Marilyn Bente (cinqavenues5@gmail.com) are collecting donated dollars and will purchase the cards through their Raise Right accounts. You can either:
• Bring your check (made out to Sheila Weiner, not TVSD) to the next Member Meeting on Monday, November 3rd at the Seventh-day Adventist Church
• Drop off a check at the clubhouse during business hours, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm M-F
• Mail your check to Sheila at 4765 Seda Drive, 92124
• VenMo Sheila (@Sheila-Weiner-1)
• Give your donation to either Sheila, Marilyn, or Cassandra when you see them at an upcoming event.
Last year we raised $1,000 to assist needy seniors right here in our county. We hope that our Village can be as generous as last year!
Please make your donations before November 10 so that we have time to purchase and deliver the gift cards.
Thank you for supporting Elderhelp & TVSD!
| November Member Meeting
The next Member Meeting is Monday, November 3rd at 3pm at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The presenter at the November Member Meeting will be Financial Advisor, Robert Farwell. Robert will expand on tips for retirees shared in October during National Financial Security Month.
At the meeting the Care Committee will also be sharing a short video about the 7 simple walking habits that physical therapists recommend to keep you steady, safe, and independent. As we get older, one fall can change everything. But the truth is that most falls can be prevented with a few small adjustments to the way you walk.
Please bring your name badges and non-perishable food items for the Seventh-day Adventist ongoing Food Drive. Thank you for registering. | | Tuesday Lunch Bunch
