DECEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

President's Message

Happy Holidays everyone! The New Year will soon be upon us. In November your Board of Directors held our annual retreat which was held at the Villa Monterey Clubhouse. Part of our morning was spent reviewing the status of our Strategic Plan the Board approved two years ago this month. Our results have been impressive! Here are some highlights:

In the interest of efficiency, we reorganized the twelve core teams into five committees. We have increased the number of members pitching in to assist with some of the committees’ work. We succeeded in attracting some outside funding sources. Our new Supporting Partners program brought in about $8,500 in 2024. Our revitalized effort to attract some grant funding raised $23,500 in 2024. We owe a huge thank you to Cassandra for her tireless effort on these projects.

Our commitment to expanding the use of ADA compliant facilities has been working well. We have increased our use of technology, including electronic messaging and publishing of the monthly Vibes newsletter. We have a relationship with students from UCSD who assist members with technology challenges once per semester.

We have begun the creation of an Advisory Board to be made up of community members who have experience working within various fields dedicated to senior citizen related issues. This will offer our Directors insights into community needs and resources. It will expand our involvement within the community; hence, provide valuable visibility for TVSD.

We have expanded our connections and participation with the Villages’ State and National Organizations, as well as with other Villages located in California. We are able to learn from and share with other like minded Villages.

At the Board Retreat we spent the afternoon reviewing the results from our recent member survey. Transportation was clearly the number one need that was identified. There are a significant number of members willing to provide rides. We will begin offering this service first. We will begin by vetting the driver volunteers, and learning how to use the Club Express software program designed to manage the requests we receive. Once we become proficient with this initiative, we’ll be in a position to expand into other service areas.

We continue to progress toward our goals thanks to the dedication of many volunteer members. This anonymous quote reminds me of our organization’s choice to move ahead, to make progress.

“There are only two options: Make progress or make excuses.”

We are not making excuses.

NYC Broadway Trip

Tierrasanta Village members enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Big Apple in November. The group attended 5 Broadway productions and enjoyed a backstage tour at the Rockettes' show. Thanks to member Bradlyn Mulvey for organizing this fun adventure!

TVSD Welcomes a New Supporting Partner

The TVSD Board of Directors is happy to announce a new village partnership with Senior Real Estate Specialist, Carol Mundell. Carol is a long-time supporter of TVSD, donating to the annual donation drive each year. She is also a long time resident of Tierrasanta and enjoys giving back to her community through her membership in the Tierrasanta Junior Women's Club.

On January 24th, Carol will be available to answer all of our real estate questions and will also provide a few ideas about potential home improvements that could bring value while allowing owners to enjoy their homes even more.

So, get those real estate questions ready!  Send them to the TVSD Front Desk at tierrasantavlg@gmail.com at your earliest convenience so Carol can have time to thoroughly answer them on January 24th.  We will meet at the Seventh-day Adventist Church at 1:30 p.m. Please register here if you plan to attend.

Thank you to Carol for her ongoing support of Tierrasanta Village!

Holiday Giving Update

Tierrasanta Village members donated FIFTY-THREE $25 Target or Walmart gift cards for San Diego seniors in need! That's an incredible total of $1,325. The TVSD Community Outreach Team, Sheila Weiner and Marilyn Bente, delivered the donations to the Elderhelp office. Their Director of Outreach and Community Engagement, Carrie McLellan, sent the following note.

Thank you for all of your support! The Tierrasanta Village’s generosity in donating towards our Holiday Angels program was incredible. We are so grateful for the donation of 53 gift cards in addition to the handmade cards for our clients!

We’ve been including the Tierrasanta Village logo in our newsletters as a sponsor of Holiday Angels because you donated so many gift cards!

We really appreciate the generosity of each of your members who contributed towards our Holiday Angels program—making a difference for so many seniors in our community this season.

Best Regards,

Carrie McClellan
Director of Outreach and Community Engagement

Do You Have Friends or Family Who Want to Join Tierrasanta Village?

Maybe they do not live in Tierrasanta. In the past they have not been eligible to join. This is not true anymore!

During our November, 2024 Annual Retreat, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to allow San Diego residents who live outside Tierrasanta to join our village. This is effective immediately. We learned in a typical year our office receives 3-5 such requests to join TVSD. In addition, we understand we have a few members who have friends who have asked to join.

We will not solicit, nor initiate marketing efforts to attract non residents, but will accept people who otherwise qualify. They will pay our full membership dues, but will need to understand that not all we offer will be available to them. A good example is they will not be eligible to join the Time Bank.

It is our understanding that there are people who are willing to travel to attend some of our events, activities, forums and exercise classes. We believe and hope this decision will allow some wonderful people to become involved with our membership. New friends, new ideas and new energy may also result.

If you have friends, or family who might be interested in becoming part of our community, please let them know that is now possible. They are welcome to attend the next Informational Happy Hour held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month 4 to 5:30 p.m. This event is an excellent way to meet other members and learn about the Village Movement. You can register yourself and your guest through the online TVSD calendar here or the Front Desk is happy to help. Call/Text 858-569-9119 or email tierrasantavlg@gmail.com.

Harmony Home Medical Supply Tour

As mobility, hearing, vision and balance diminish with aging, we must find ways to remain safe in our homes. There is plenty of technology to help meet these challenges. On January 10th members will meet for lunch at Elijah’s Delicatessen and then head over to tour Harmony Home Medical Supply. Owner Erica Sell will show us around and let us check out all the options and latest technology to help us age safely and independently at home. Harmony Home Medical has an extensive inventory, providing everything from walkers and grab bars to luxurious adjustable beds, lift chairs and electric scooters, ensuring that you have all the tools necessary to age comfortably and safely in place.

Don't forget that Harmony Home Medical offers TVSD members a free home safety, accessibility and home modification consultation. Sign up for the assessment during the tour or call the store anytime for immediate assistance at (858) 560-8177.  Please register here if you are able to attend.

Care Committee Corner

It’s Soup Weather!

There’s a little chill in the air this time of year. Most people call it Fall, and some of us call it Soup Weather! If you’re a soup lover, you might be interested to know that soup has many health benefits. Here are just some of the health benefits:

Hydration. Since soup is water-based, it helps you stay hydrated.

Nutrients. Vegetable-based soups help you get your vitamins, and bone broth is a great source of collagen, a protein that strengthens bones, muscles, and skin tissues.

Weight loss. Liquids help us feel full. If we eat soup as a first course, we may not eat as much of our main course.

Warmth. Soups warm us up, and help break up congestion.

Economy. Soups are an economical choice for meals. A vegetable broth is inexpensive to make, and more expensive ingredients, such as chicken, beef, or fish can be added in small quantities. Soups can also be made from leftovers. Put your leftover vegetables and meat in a broth base, and season to your taste. This is a great way to make your food go farther.

So, next time you feel like having some soup, take heart that you are doing something good for your health.

Also, here’s an important reminder, TVSD has free medical equipment for your use or to borrow:

Social Committee Updates

An Invitation from the Social Committee:

THANK YOU to the members who took the time to fill out our Social Event Survey. We have used your input to schedule events for each month of the new year and now have a special invitation for members who are willing to help the social committee plan and implement these events.

WHAT:  2025 Calendar Kick off and Lunch (Salad and Dessert)
WHEN:  Tuesday, January 14th, 11:30-1:00
WHERE:  Villa Monterey Clubhouse
WHY:  (1) We want to make it a little more festive this year by providing lunch.
(2) We want you to hear about the social events we have planned.
(3) For each event we need members to sign up to be part of a planning team. There are many small ways to help.

We are a caring community working together to create programs and services. Joining a planning team of any kind is a great way to contribute to the Village, get to know members and have fun!!!! All these events cannot be carried out by just a few members.

“It takes a Village!” Mark your calendars for January 14th and sign up on the Website calendar if you are interested in learning about our events and helping the social committee.
