 | President's Message
Do you remember to write 2025; rather than, 2024? I am still struggling, as it just doesn’t seem possible another year is behind us. I believe time flies when you are having fun. We at TVSD are having a lot of fun to go along with our learning and caring for one another. This year promises to fly by as well. Just take a look at our events calendar. Please be sure to take advantage of as many programs and events as you can.
The final results of our 2024 budget year are in and have been accepted by the Board. Our expenses exceeded income by $7,166. We fund the difference by drawing down from our savings account. We had budgeted for a $22,510 deficit. The biggest difference was that our Business Manager only worked into May. Our investments grew in 2024 by about $7,000. Basically, this means we spent our investment income, a common occurrence for nonprofits. In addition, our investment assets grew by around $44,000 in 2024. With a total of $320,000+ in various bank accounts and in investments, TVSD is in good financial health.
At its January meeting, the Board approved a budget for 2025 with a projected deficit of $16,000. Our CEP grant this year is down from $20,000 in 2024 to $9,800 in 2025. After much discussion and consideration of various options, it was decided to postpone the search for an additional part time administrative assistant until mid 2025. Cassandra has increased her hours from 20 to 30 per week, and is confident she can handle the work load required for the first six months. We anticipate increasing volunteer assistance as well.
Our transportation services initiative continues to be underway. We have vetted two new drivers to help with this program. We are going to need more vetted drivers before we can fully implement this service. Please consider if you may join this growing list of volunteer drivers.
The ad hoc committee assigned the task of developing a definition and set of services available to members who live outside of Tierrasanta is complete. Thanks go to Bradlyn Mulvey, Candy Walsh and Marilyn Bente. They will present their recommendations to the Board at our February meeting.
Please remember to put March 5, 2025 on your calendars and plan on attending our annual business meeting.
I offer the following quotation from and in honor of President Jimmy Carter:
“We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles.”
Ken Ross

Member Meeting February 3rd
The next Member Meeting will be on Monday, February 3rd at 3 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Our guest presenter will be Junne Esguerra, Director of Programs for San Diego Seniors Community Foundation (SDSCF). This foundation works to increase awareness toward issues impacting seniors and to increase philanthropy to senior-focused organizations. Less than 3% of all private philanthropic dollars in the United States are directed towards senior programs and causes. SDSCF is dedicated to improving that statistic so that older adults can stay socially connected, physically active and engaged in their communities. This event will also be available via Zoom. Please register.
Join members after the meeting at KNB Bistro located inside Keg N Bottle liquor Store!
Please bring your name badges and non-perishable food items for the Seventh-day Adventist ongoing Food Drive - thank you! | | | Real Estate Q&A
Thanks to Senior Real Estate Specialist, Carol Mundell, for her time last month sharing her knowledge and home modification tips to consider as we age in our Tierrasanta homes. Carol is offering all TVSD members a monthly home valuation report at no-cost. You can learn more about Carol here. Contact her at 858-967-7331 or carol.mundell@c21affiliated.com to request a no-cost monthly valuation report. | Care Committee Corner
Saunas - Are They For You?
Have you ever been in a sauna? If so, you know that the heat they produce can give you a feeling of relaxation and well-being. If you have never been in a sauna, you may wonder exactly what they are, and why you should or should not try one. So, first, what is a sauna?
Merriam Webster dictionary has two definitions for a sauna: One is “a Finnish steam bath in which the steam is provided by water thrown on hot stones”, and the second Is “a dry heat bath”. Asking Google for a typical temperature gave me many answers. Most seemed to be between 90 degrees and 140 degrees. Hot!
I don’t have a sauna, but have been in both the steam and dry versions in health clubs and gyms. I have to say that both types made me feel better after use than I felt before use. Why? Here are some benefits I found listed on the internet:
*Improved circulation: the sauna’s heat dilates blood vessels.
*Reduced stress and improved sleep.
*Improved mobility - heat can relax muscles and joints.
*Improved skin health - sweating can release toxins, and as noted above, improve circulation.
An interesting note I found was that a good exercise or strength training session can give you the same benefits as a sauna, since you will ideally work up a sweat during exercise.
There are some risks of sauna use listed on the internet also, including dehydration and light-headedness. Of course, the internet is not an expert, and neither am I. You should definitely check with your physician prior to using a sauna. If they give you the o.k., try it and see if you feel better.

Harmony Home Medical Supply Tour
In January, twelve Village members enjoyed lunch together at Elijah's Delicatessen - yum! Then they headed over to Harmony Home Medical Supply to meet with Owner, Erica Sell. She showed us around Harmony Medical's large showroom, full of equipment that can truly help us live independently at home as we age. The selection is impressive! There is a large variety of walkers, scooters, transport/wheel chairs and some very comfy beds with all kinds of helpful settings! You can see all of it online here: https://harmonyhomemedical.com/. Keep in mind that Harmony Medical provides rental equipment as well as discounted used items, which could be a good option for more expensive items such as electric beds and electric wheelchairs. All the members were glad they attended and thankful to know that there are many tools to help us age comfortably and safely in place. Thanks for the tour Erica!
Erica continues to offer free home safety, accessibility and home modification consultations exclusively to TVSD members. Several villagers have taken advantage of this offer and expressed positive experiences. You can request a safety and accessibility assessment at any time by contacting Harmony Home Medical Supply directly (858-560-8177). Or, you can reach out to the Village Front Desk for assistance. | | Mike Rohman | | Jane Rohman | | |

He has specialized in diagnostic testing, tinnitus counseling, hearing aid programming, and vestibular evaluations. He will offer advice about hearing aid care and maintenance and the importance of consistent use. There are many professionals who treat hearing loss and he will define those specific roles.
