JUNE 2025 NEWSLETTER

President's Message

In my first newsletter as TVSD President, I must start my thanking Ken Ross for the great job he did as our President for the past 1½ years. Thanks to his business knowledge our Village remains on sound financial footing. His sincere interest in our members and the sustainability of the Village puts us on the right path moving forward. Fortunately, Ken will continue to be on the Board of Directors as Past President. I’d also like to thank Marilyn Bente who has been on the Board for eight years and part of our executive team as Past President. Thankfully, as she leaves the Board, she will continue in her role as Membership/Volunteer Chair. Her dedication to our Village is unwavering! Thank you to Bradlyn Mulvey who has agreed to be our Vice President and to Jinny Batterson who will be replacing Bradlyn’s previous position as member-at-large on the Board. It will be an honor to serve as your president and I am confident, with the help of our Board members, Cassandra and all the wonderful members, I will have a successful and rewarding term as President. I will say this a lot: We are all in this together!

The Board of Directors is embarking on a significant undertaking that will set the pathway for our members to age in our homes for as long as possible. We are in the process of researching what various, established Villages in California have done to set up and carry out an effective Member Services operation. Based on a previous member survey, we would start with transportation and then move into other needs. There is a lot to think about: Utilizing members within and outside the Village, handling member service requests, budget, liability insurance, and training. We know that keeping Member Services up and running will take a part-time coordinator. Cassandra can’t add this to her marketing and administration workload. Our current membership is primarily interested in social and recreational activities and, based on feedback we’ve received, would rather pay for a part-time staff person to perform the needed tasks vs volunteering themselves. How would we pay for the additional staff person and keep our dues low? As we research, we want to be transparent in all that is involved in moving ahead. We will ask for member input throughout the process, so heads up and stay tuned! Please read your emails, newsletters, come to the general meetings, ask questions, stay informed. Remember, we are in this together!

As a teacher and administrator, June was always the month that students and teachers anticipated the approaching summer vacation – a time when life slowed down a bit. Unlike the schools, fortunately the Village does not slow down! Each month offers a variety of things to do to keep us connected. I hope all of you take the time to look at the Village calendar, sign-up and participate! Join the fun!🌷🌞

TVSD Welcomes a New Supporting Partner

The TVSD Board of Directors is happy to announce our new Supporting Partner, Amanda Huerta with Amanda Huerta Benefits Consulting.

Amanda has been in the Insurance Industry for 6 years now and is partnering with us to help with all of your Medicare Questions and needs.  Medicare can be very confusing when it comes to the different options that you have, the providers that you use, and understanding what you have to pay out of pocket, not to mention those constant annual changes! She treats her clients like her family, and wants to make sure that all of her clients are well educated about Medicare and are comfortable with their choices.

Amanda has been in San Diego for 25 years and a Tierrasanta resident for 4 years!

Tierrasanta Village Members are welcome to call Amanda and have their Medicare plans reviewed for free at any time.

You can also visit her website: https://www.amandahuertabenefitconsulting.com/

Amanda will be sharing her expertise as part of the TVSD Summer Speaker Series. Save the date of August 6th 2-3:30PM and registration will open shortly. If you have any pressing Medicare questions, do not hesitate to contact Amanda now. She is happy to support TVSD members in any way she can.

Taco Party

A BIG thank you to the panning committee for the Taco Party event!  It was a fantastic evening of yummy food and friends. Thank you as well to the Village Vocals for their performance.

AARP Scam Jam Tour

In May, Tierrasanta Village was a host location for the AARP Scam Jam Tour. At the event, experts shared how to recognize and avoid scams. If you were not able to attend, the presentation is available on the TVSD YouTube Channel.

Craft Fair & Parade Day

It was another fantastic celebration in Tierrasanta on parade day!  The TVSD Craft Fair Booth was a huge success, raising $600 for our Village. Thanks to everyone who came out to march in the parade, as well as donated to or worked in the booth at the Craft Fair. We are already looking forward to next year's festivities!  Enjoy these event pictures from our village photographer, Mike Rigdon.

Summer Is Sunscreen Time

One of the benefits of living in San Diego is our sunny weather. We love it! As we move into the summer season, it’s especially important to remember to apply sunscreen daily to help prevent skin damage, sunburns, and skin cancer.

Once you’ve committed to using sunscreen, how do you find the one that’s the best for you? The labels have so much information. You may have sensitive skin. Just shopping for sunscreen can be overwhelming. Where to start?

You may start by consulting your dermatologist. What do they recommend for your unique skin? It’s also good to know what all that information on the sunscreen package means so you can pick the right one. Here are some terms commonly found on sunscreen bottles and what they mean:

Mineral Sunscreen: These act as a physical barrier to the sun’s UV rays. They reflect the sun’s rays like a shield.

Chemical Sunscreen: These absorb UV rays into the skin and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin.

UVA Rays: “UV” stands for the sun’s ultraviolet rays. UVA rays cause premature aging and wrinkles. A sunscreen label may state that the product protects against UVA rays.

UVB Rays: These are shorter ultraviolet rays than UVA rays, and are the main cause of sunburns. They are also a major factor in development of skin cancer. A sunscreen label may indicate that the product provides UVB protection.

SPF: This stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF is a measure of how long a sunscreen can protect your skin from UVB rays compared to unprotected skin. The number following “SPF” is theoretically the factor by which you can multiply the time spent in the sun and be protected from UVB ray skin damage. For example, SPF 15 would theoretically allow you to stay protected 15 times longer in the sun than without sunscreen. Dermatologists generally recommend using a product with SPF 30 or higher, and reapplying every two hours.

Broad Spectrum: This means that a product protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

There are many more factors to consider when choosing a sunscreen, such as: Do I want a cream or spray? Waterproof? Tinted, so it can serve as makeup also? Whatever you choose, the most important thing to remember is to USE your sunscreen!

Timebank Topics

The Timebank committee has been actively following up on suggestions since the gathering on April 29th. Our top priority is simplifying the process of exchanging offers and requests. Current offers include transportation, cooking, gardening advice, computer assistance, companionship, and handyman services. We encourage TVSD members to join Timebank and promote the circuit of giving and receiving!

New Membership Opportunity

Have you had friends and family members express a wish that the neighborhood where they live had a Village where they could exercise, enjoy a plethora of activities, and be informed of the latest developments in health care? Several of our members have said that they have witnessed jealousy from their friends of all that our Village has to offer and a desire to belong to an active and caring organization such as ours. Our Board of Directors has been working on the idea of offering TVSD membership to those friends and family members. Earlier this year an ad-hoc committee was formed to outline what this membership would entail, what would be the possible constraints, and how it would be offered. In March, this committee presented their suggestions to the Board and this topic was discussed and mulled over at length. At the most recent board meeting, it was agreed that we are now ready to offer TVSD membership to those friends and family members living outside of Tierrasanta.

Here is how it will work:  First of all, under no circumstances will we ever be soliciting nor actively marketing membership in our Village outside of Tierrasanta. This “non-resident” membership will be offered only to friends and family members of current and active TVSD members. Hopefully, this will increase our pool of volunteers as it will grow our membership and will increase our revenue.

These new members will have the same dues structure as our current membership: $290 per year for a single person and $395 for a household membership.

At the applicant’s orientation session, volunteering for our Village will be emphasized and agreed upon. Also, it will be made clear that some of our services may not be available to them. For example, we may not have volunteer drivers who are willing to drive to Scripps Ranch to give a ride to one of our activities or even to a doctor’s appointment. Or the Care Committee may not be able to provide a meal train to Kearny Mesa. We can’t guarantee all of our services when these are provided by volunteers within our Village.

So, if you have good friends and family members whom you’d like to refer for TVSD membership, please invite them to one of our prospective member happy hours, give them one of our brochures, and have them contact either Cassandra or Marilyn Bente.

If you have any questions about this new membership offering, please contact Marilyn Bente, Membership Chairperson.
