FEBRUARY 2026 NEWSLETTER

President's Message

Happy February! This is a great month to cherish love, relationships and connections. Our Village calendar offers wonderful opportunities for connecting with each other. Look on the February calendar and sign up for the Member-to-Member Forum on Chronic Pain or for Casual Conversation. Join the field trip to Birch Aquarium. Chat with other members at the Tuesday Lunch Bunch or Third Thursday Social. Men, sign up for Romeo or Men’s Java and Jive. Puzzlemania is a perfect activity to connect with members you may not have had a chance to meet. Not sure how to sign up? Come to the Members’ Meeting on Feb. 2nd. Mark Lasky is going to show us how to navigate our website.

February 15 is National Village Day – as declared by the US House of Representatives. The Village movement began in 2002 in the Beacon Hill neighborhood in Boston. There are now 280-300 Villages nationwide. We are fortunate to be part of the Village California Movement as well as the Village-to-Village National Movement. We should all be proud of the work our Village is doing to help us thrive in our homes and keep us connected to each other and our community.

The Board has finalized our Strategic Plan and approved the 2026 Budget. You will hear more about finances, along with our accomplishments, goals and objectives at the March 2 Annual Meeting.  I encourage ALL members to sign up to attend this once-a-year meeting. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, connect with other members and enjoy a light dinner provided by the Board members.

This month, the Board is offering members an opportunity to learn the leadership needs of our Village. There are many roles to fill such as committee chairs and members of the Board. We will be holding meetings to discuss what being a leader in our Village means and will identify possible opportunities for members to consider, whether it be now or in the future.  If you are interested or know of a member you’d like to see considered for a Board position or another leadership role, please email me and I will make sure an invitation is sent.

Have a great February! Spread love and kindness!

Chronic Pain Member Forum

Friday, February 6th 1:00-2:30 PM
Seventh-day Adventist Church

Do you experience pain without an OFF Switch? An Unending
Ache? Come to our Chronic Pain Forum and let’s share your ways to deal
with pain.

Chronic pain can significantly affect the lives of seniors. So many of us have curtailed activities we used to enjoy. It often happens slowly and soon we realize how our lives have drastically changed. We tend to keep it to ourselves so as not to appear to be complainers. However, by gathering as a group, we can share our feelings and possibly learn from each other new options for dealing with pain and the isolation it may cause. We will discover we are not alone which may lead to more positive thinking.

So, join us on Friday, February 6, 2026 at 1:00pm for a member-to-member discussion group for those with chronic pain or for those with plain old nagging pains. Perhaps y
ou’ll learn some new ways to cope with the pain and help others to gain some skills too.

Please register.

Casseroles Are Making a Comeback?

For some of us, they never left!  You can’t beat a tuna noodle or taco casserole for a comfort food dinner on a busy night.  There are younger generations, though, who didn’t grow up on grandma’s tuna casserole, with or without the crumbled potato chips on top.  They are driving the new popularity of casseroles.

An internet search on the new popularity of casseroles gives an AI-generated list of reasons for this trend:

                *Convenience and Efficiency
                *Comfort and Nostalgia
                *Budget-Friendly
*Versatility—there are casseroles for every meal, and even dessert.

New and trendy casserole recipes include keto, vegan, and other options with more natural and less processed ingredients.  I’ll include a healthier-than-most casserole recipe I found online*;

Zucchini Pizza Casserole
Ingredients for “crust”: 4 medium zucchini, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 2 eggs, 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded; 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded; 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated.

Ingredients for “pizza”: 3/4 cup pizza sauce, 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded; fresh basil, chiffonade.  You may add pepperoni slices, if desired, or any other pizza toppings.

Instructions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray 9 x 13 cooking dish with cooking spray and set aside. Grate zucchini and measure out 4 cups.  Sprinkle salt over zucchini and let sit for 10 minutes.  Using a tea towel, ring out zucchini to remove any excess water.  Place in a bowl and mix with black pepper, eggs, 1 cup mozzarella cheese, 1 cup cheddar cheese, and parmesan cheese.  Stir to combine well.  Spread zucchini mixture evenly into prepared dish and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and top with pizza sauce, remaining mozzarella cheese, and any desired pizza toppings.  Bake 15 more minutes and remove from oven.  Garnish with fresh basil.  Cool 5 minutes before serving.  Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.  This freezes well.  It’s healthy, and good to share with your friends and family.  Enjoy!

FINANCIAL FOCUS®
Love languages can help you enjoy Valentine’s Day on a budget

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, the most meaningful expressions of love often cost little to nothing. The key is understanding your partner’s love language and tailoring your approach accordingly. When you know what makes your partner feel truly valued, you can create memorable experiences without the financial pressure that often accompanies this holiday.

The five love languages — words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch — offer a roadmap for showing affection without overspending. Here’s how to express your love while staying financially smart this Valentine’s Day.

Member Forum: GLP-1 Drugs

The weight loss journey has always been complicated, but now with the introduction of GLP-1 drugs (glucagon like peptides-1, also known as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Zepbound), the decision is even more complicated. Generally speaking, doctors will prescribe these drugs only if certain conditions are present (such as diabetes or sleep apnea), but these drugs can also be bought on the internet.  If you’ve had experience with these drugs, come to this peer-to-peer group meeting and share your knowledge. If you have not had experience but are considering using GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, come to get information that might help in your discussion with you doctor.
