MAY 2024 NEWSLETTER

A Message from the Board President

Volunteerism is alive within Tierrasanta Village of San Diego! Over the past decade, or so, we have frequently heard how volunteerism in the Untied States is on the decline. Many Churches and other non-profit organizations have been struggling to attract people willing to volunteer. On April 12, TVSD held our annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch at the Tierrasanta Lutheran Church. If you were able to attend, you know what a special event it was. There were fifty three members in attendance, all gathered to say Thank You to all who have volunteered their time and knowledge to assist other members. Marilyn Bente did a wonderful job organizing and hosting this luncheon. In addition to recognizing the people who are serving on our Board, committees, and ad hoc groups, she had the volunteers who have been doing so since our organization’s beginning stand and be recognized. That is fifteen plus years! Now that is commitment! We are truly blessed with so many members who have a volunteer attitude. We learned a very large number of our volunteers also offer their time to several other non profit organizations.

Recently, we consolidated the number of Core Teams into five Committees. I imagine the term Core Team will take awhile to fade away, but we will be using the more universally familiar term of ‘committee’. This consolidation is one of the Board’s efforts to spread the work load among more people. Another goal has been to move newer members onto the committees and into leadership roles. This is a good time to offer a great big Thank You to Rhoda Keegan, Ann Lasdon, Greg Zweibel, Don Stewart and Mark Lasky. Rhoda has been a trooper holding down the Treasurer’s position over a number of years. At the April Board meeting, Mark Lasky was elected as our new Assistant Treasurer. This change will provide Rhoda with additional support and add another person who will become closely familiar with our financial operations. Ann, also after several years, will no longer be writing checks to pay our bills. Thanks to Ann for keeping us current so we never received any dunning notices! The long term commitments by Greg and Don as the Information Technology Co-Chairs came to an end in mid April. They happily turned the Chair’s job over to Mark Lasky. The most time consuming and challenging work of the IT committee is complete thanks to the dedication of the committee’s five members. Mark has been very active since joining the Board. He is confident he has the time, interest and skills to perform both tasks. We view his duplication of roles as temporary, while we continue to search for a permanent replacement for one, or the other positions. Greg and Don will continue on the committee, so will be there, along with Dick Benton and Gunnar Schalin to keep things moving from an IT perspective.

We are looking to expand the number of members serving on the Membership, Marketing, and Information Technology committees. If you have an interest in any of these, please speak with a Board member. Though experience can be helpful, it is not always necessary. Please help us continue to spread the work being created by our growing organization. The author and inspiration speaker, Zig Ziglar has been quoted as saying: “You never know when a moment and a few sincere words can have an impact on a life.” Please take time when an occasion arises to thank the many member volunteers who are committed to making sure TVSD continues to flourish. Thank you all!

New Village Supporting Partner

The Senior Advisory Council (SAC) has a long history of providing a broad range of expertise to older adults throughout San Diego County. This group collectively brings an impressive amount of knowledge to the clients it serves.  The group provides expertise in the areas of fiduciary services, insurance, home health equipment, senior care coordination, and much more.

Save the date!  SAC specialists will be sharing their knowledge and service options with TVSD and the Tierrasanta Community on July 22nd. Find out more about this new partner group on the Tierrasanta Village Supporting Partner page. TVSD is grateful to have SAC as a Supporting Partner and looks forward to working together with this group to support seniors in San Diego!

TVSD Outing to Spanish Village

On the morning of April 4, eleven Villagers met at Spanish Village in Balboa Park where artisan studios are located. This fun and educational outing was organized and facilitated by members Laurie Brown and Mike Sisson. We were treated to three different artisan demonstrations: a potter, a glass blower, and a jewelry maker. The potter was our host Mike Sisson. He showed us how the potter’s wheel operates, presented the various stages of making a pitcher out of a lump of clay, and voila … a beautifully crafted pitcher emerged! We were all certainly impressed! Next we watched a glass blower create a drinking glass, reminiscent of the fine skills of Venetian Murano glass. Our third demonstration was of creating a silver ring from very thin strands of this metal. Our thanks to Laurie and Mike for hosting this most enjoyable tour!

Bunko - Second Wednesday of the Month

Congrats to the big Bunko winner this month - Sheila Weiner! Sheila tied for most wins, tied for most buncos and the most juncos totaling $36.00.
Yay, Sheila Weiner!!

Next Member Meeting

Don't miss the next Member Meeting on Monday, May 6th at 3 p.m. Our Guest Speaker will be Steve Wedeking, Estate Planning Attorney. Steve will share information about Legacy Giving. Legacy gifts are distributed after you pass away and can be made up of a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your assets, or an item of value. These gifts are a way to leave a lasting legacy of generosity and make a cause you care about an important part of your life story.

We will also hear from one of our new supporting partners, Jonathan Schwartz with Partner in Aging. Jonathan will introduce himself and present a brief overview of the several aging in place services that he provides to the community.

This meeting is available in person or via Zoom. Register now if you are able to attend. Please support the Seventh-day Adventist Food Drive by bringing non-perishable items to each monthly Member Meeting. Thank you!

Supporting Partnership with Rancho San Carlos Pet Clinic

TVSD welcomes another Supporting Partner! Established in 1976, Rancho San Carlos Pet Clinic is a full-service animal health care facility offering a broad range of veterinary services, including wellness and preventative care, advanced diagnostics, acupuncture, dentistry, surgery, and more. House calls and telemedicine options are available, offering a convenient and efficient way for pet owners to seek medical advice and treatment. View the extensive list of available services at the Rancho San Carlos Pet Clinic webpage

Rancho San Carlos Pet Clinic is affiliated with Tell Tail Veterinary Urgent Care which was formed to address the gap between general practice and 24-hour emergency specialty medicine. When a pet is having an urgent medical issue but can’t be seen by the family veterinarian, Tell Tail can help. They will work with your family veterinarian and will provide them a record of your pet’s visit. Tierrasantans are fortunate to have this facility right off Hwy 15 at Friars Road in case an urgent issue arises.

It is well known that pet ownership reduces feelings of loneliness and isolation. Members of the TVSD Dog Pack certainly agree! The TVSD Dog Pack meets monthly on Saturday mornings. This event for dogs 20 lbs. and under provides "play-date" time for pets and owners alike. Pet ownership is not a requirement for attendance.  All members are welcome to visit and enjoy time with furry companions! The next Dog Pack meeting is May 11th at 10:30 a.m. Register online if you are able to attend.

Care Committee Corner

We all love to be independent! After all, isn’t that one reason we joined Tierrasanta Village? We want to be able to live independently in our own homes for as long as possible. When it comes to driving, we want to do so for as long as we can. What happens when we have to rely on others for rides? We may go through periods where we can’t drive—say, when recovering from surgery—or we may have gotten to that point where it’s not safe for us to drive any more. In either case, what are our options for getting a ride?

Several years ago, TVSD held a Member-to-Member Forum to discuss and share transportation options. Out of that forum, a list was assembled of transportation options for Villagers. That list was posted on the TVSD website.

Now that several years have passed, your Care Committee decided that the list needed an update. The update has been done, and the revised list has been posted on the website. It includes many options you may be familiar with, and some you may not. Uber and Lyft are there, along with Jewish Family Services’ On the Go program, and others. Check it out! If you print a hard copy, there is even a quick-reference list at the bottom that you may cut off and post on your refrigerator or bulletin board. Website addresses and phone numbers will be right there for you.

This link will take you to the Transportation Resources on the TVSD website. Click on the Transportation Options button to view or print the list.  We wish you happy and successful traveling!

Someone We Should Know
by Carol Lee

Nonie and Adele Schroffel’s family was of German descent. The girls’ maternal grandfather had avoided serving in the German Army in the late 1800s by moving to the United States, where he met his wife—then the couple moved to Canada.

Nonie shared, “Mom, Dad and Adele moved from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada to Vancouver, where I was born. Our father moved to Seattle to avoid the damp climate of Manitoba, since he had arthritis, not realizing that the conditions there were similar. He applied for a green card and found a job so that he could bring the family to the U.S.--which he was able to accomplish in the early 50s. Four years later we moved to Seattle after being approved for green cards. Three years later we moved to San Diego, because LA was just too crowded.
There was no special education in schools at the time, so Adele, Nonie’s sister, lived with their parents. She studied very hard to become an American citizen, and is very proud of passing the test.

Nonie says that her travels with Sea World, in accounting, involved a lot of moving around. “Besides Sea World San Diego, where I started and ended my career, are ---Here goes: Sea World of Ohio, Sea World of Florida, Sea World of Texas, Cypress Gardens Winter Haven Florida, Marineland in Palos Verdes CA, Atlantis Restaurant Mission Bay, Boom Trenchard's Flarepath Restaurant San Diego, Captain Kidd’s Sea Food Galleys restaurants San Diego, Sea World Corp. HBJ Orlando. I sum it up--3 winters in Ohio and 2 summers in Orlando.”

When Nonie was transferred to Orlando in the 1980s, she met Roy Neill, who was head of IT. Nonie and Roy married and worked in Orlando until Roy’s serious lung issues forced him to quit his job to move to a healthier environment. That is when Nonie was transferred back to San Diego, while Roy went to La Mesa Spring Valley School District, where he became the head of IT until he had to go on medical disability.

Back home in San Diego, the girls’ dad had had a stroke, so Mom was at home with Adele, and Dad was in a care facility. The San Diego Regional Center found a little place off Adams Avenue, provided by JFS, which had services which would benefit Adele. She was picked up and brought back home each day and thoroughly enjoyed her time at the home. After their dad died and the place closed, Adele continued full-time at home with Mom. Their mom died in 2003, and Adele came to live with Nonie and Roy.

Roy’s lungs continued to deteriorate, causing him to retire and go on disability in 1995. In 2000 he was in Hospice at home, with long-term care support until 2010. Nonie worked until 2008, when a new park owner offered severance packages, which made it possible for her to be at home with Roy. After Roy’s death, Adele remained at home with Nonie.

When TVSD was new, Nonie had been a member and fondly remembers the Alaska cruise, where she became friends with the Kerrs. When she started volunteering at the Mission San Diego de Alcala, she didn’t have time for TVSD activities, so she didn’t renew her Village membership. She and Adele were able to do a lot of traveling together.

During COVID, Nonie was diagnosed with cancer and was treated aggressively. She has now been ‘clean’ for two years and is monitored every four months. After COVID she decided to “get out and do something good for both of us’. She went to the VMC and got information from Cassandra about our current activities. She and Adele attended a Neighborhood Group at Ginny VanBenthuysen’s home. She joined TVSD and recommends that all of us consider doing Chair Yoga. She was using a walker when she began and soon went to a cane, which she attributes to the chair yoga exercises. She and Adele enjoy SNAP, and many of our social activities.

Roy and Nonie’s motto: “Yesterday's history, tomorrow's a mystery, and today is a gift--that's why they call it the present."

Volunteers are needed to chat with community members/potential prospective members visiting our booth.

TVSD will also host a game booth at Tierrafest at the Lutheran Church from 4-8PM. This will be a great fundraising opportunity for our organization. Donations are needed for the game booth!  We plan to give out LOTS of prizes with candy being the most popular among the kids.  Please bring your candy donations to the next Member Meeting on May 6th or contact the Village Front Desk to arrange for pick up of your donation.
