SEPTEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER | Vice President's Message
Ken Ross, our president, is currently on a two-week vacation, cruising the coast of Maine with Sue. We wish them safe travels on their cruise and on their trip back to California in October.
On September 3rd, our Neighborhood Captains are gathering at the Clubhouse to share ideas and to learn more about the TVSD Survey the Board of Directors and Committee Leaders plan to implement through the neighborhood groups. As I mentioned at our last general meeting, TVSD, just like other villages nationwide, works hard to connect seniors to the resources needed to age well in our own community. I’m proud of what our village has accomplished over the last 16 years. We have social activities to reduce isolation, technology to keep us connected and informed, volunteer opportunities to keep us busy and provide a sense of purpose, and a Care Committee that keeps a pulse on how our members are doing and provides educational opportunities and connection to aging resources.
Now after all these years, are there other support services our Village members would like to see offered? The survey will hopefully indicate what services our village could offer in the future and about who can volunteer to offer these services. Look for invitations to a neighborhood group meeting and please try to attend. Remember, what we do in the Village depends on the needs and interests of our members. It is vital we get input from everyone!

We couldn’t have asked for a better evening for our August 23rd Luau. Thank you to the 80 members who came and a big thank you to the members of the Luau planning team. The food catered by L & L Barbeque arrived right on time and the Makani Kai Dance Troupe brought smiles to all attendees. The music and entertainment certainly made it festive. Thank you to the Village Vocals who started our evening of fun and to Mark Lasky who set up speakers for the Hawaiian music. In addition to attending planning meetings, there were members who baked the cookies, wrapped the utensils, picked up supplies, helped serve dinner, came early to decorate and stayed late to clean up. Love our Village teamwork!
Now it’s time to sign up for Happy Hour Bingo to be held September 27 in the Fellowship Hall of the Lutheran Church from 3:00-5:00. Come join us for an enjoyable afternoon of bingo and fellowship. The fee of $10 includes bingo cards, light snacks and prizes. Water and iced tea will be provided. If you desire a different beverage, you are welcome to bring what you’d like. Register here for this sure to be fun event! | | New Supporting Partner
The TVSD Board of Directors is happy to announce a new Village Supporting Partner. Harmony Home Medical Supply is a premier full-service medical equipment provider that has been serving the community for 16 years. The Harmony Home Medical staff pride themselves on delivering unparalleled service in sales, rentals, repairs, and installations of a wide range of medical equipment. Their goal is to not just be a provider, but to be a true partner in enhancing quality of life through top-tier products and exceptional customer service.
If you are like most older adults, you wish to remain in your current home and community as long as possible. Successful aging in place requires a lot of planning. As mobility, hearing, vison and balance diminish with aging, we must find ways to remain safe in our homes. There is plenty of technology to help meet these challenges. On September 17th, Erica Sell, Founder of Harmony Home Medical Supply, will provide attendees with a thorough understanding of the challenges they may encounter in their homes as they age. Harmony Home Medical has an extensive inventory, providing everything from walkers and grab bars to luxurious adjustable beds, lift chairs and electric scooters, ensuring that you have all the tools necessary to age comfortably and safely in place.
All attendees at the September 17th event are eligible to receive a complimentary in-home assessment provided by experienced Harmony Home Medical Supply staff. The assessment will include a safety inspection, alerting members to areas that may need additional lighting or grab bars to avoid a potentially devastating fall. The Harmony team can also help determine which larger changes may be available for your current residence in the future. For example, if you live in a two-story home, indoor or outdoor stairlifts may be an option. Perhaps a walk-in shower will one day be safer than stepping in and out of a bathtub. Harmony Home Medical has a team of contractors and can assist with all construction plans and design decisions.
Please register here if you can attend September 17th 2:30-4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Tierrasanta Lutheran Church at 11240 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Please contact Tierrasanta Village with questions or assistance with registration at tierrantavlg@gmail.com or 858-569-9119.
Thank you Harmony Home Health for supporting older adults in Tierrasanta!
| Message from the Board of Directors
Villagers,
Are you sick of being afraid to open that email for fear some bad actor is going to relieve you of your life savings? How do I know if that’s really the person I think it is on the phone? Is that an actual government notice I got in the mail? The world has become such a scary place with the threat of scams, cons and other criminal activity.
If this hits home with you, you won’t want to miss our next monthly member meeting at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Monday, September 9th.
Your Village leadership has made arrangements for a very special presentation by the Health and Community Engagement Team of the Aging & Independent Services (AIS) division of San Diego County (Click this link to see more about AIS. We guarantee it’s safe and not a scam! https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/ais.html).
Jonathan Tague will be presenting “Don’t Get Hooked”: Preventing Financial Abuse, Scams, and Fraud. This is an interactive PowerPoint presentation for older adults and family caregivers on preventing financial abuse, scams, and fraud. Topics include: grandparent scams, romance scams, sweepstakes and lottery scams, telemarketing scams, IRS and other governmental scams, and more! “Don’t Get Hooked” booklets and other resources will be provided at the meeting.
This is a must see for anyone who is concerned about this serious threat to our well being! Register now (another SAFE link – we promise! https://tvsd.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=4002&club_id=77594&item_id=2216425). Or, as usual, this presentation will also be available for remote participation via Zoom (https://us06web.zoom.us/j/9031272542?omn=89126576972).
We hope to see you there!

Get ready for a glamorous and enthralling journey in this adaptation of Agatha Christie’s masterpiece. Enter world-famous detective Hercule Poirot, who must navigate a train full of suspects and solve the murder before the killer strikes again. With humor and romance, Tony Award–nominated playwright Ken Ludwig takes audiences on a thrill ride in a spectacular production whose gorgeous designs and innovative staging are a true knockout.
| Volunteer Thank You
GRACIAS MERCI MAHALO DANKE GRAZIE
In any language …… THANK YOU ………
To all of you who contributed in any way to our successful letter writing campaign for the Honor Flight “Mail Call”.
We sent 212 cards and notes towards this project, up from 140 thank you messages to our veterans this past spring. I am so grateful for all of the cards and notepaper donated, not only by our members, but by their friends and neighbors. Too many to name here! Such an outpouring!
But I would like to recognize our members who actually wrote those 212 messages of appreciation: Claire Blum, Laurie Brown, Patty George, Linda Juhasz, Becky Lunneberg, Bradlyn Mulvey, Mike Sisson, Ginny Van, Sheila Weiner, and Fran Zweibel. Also, a special thank you to Barbara Lester who helped create a template for patriotic note cards with our TVSD logo.
Upon receipt of our box of cards, the coordinator of the Honor Flight “Mail Call”, Donna Hester, wrote these words of appreciation:
“Just wanted to let you know that I received your wonderful cards. The Veterans will love and appreciate them! ….. I think Mail Call and the Homecoming are the most favorite times during their wonderful weekend.”
Thank you all again!

| Care Committee Corner
Did you know that the State of California has a Department of Aging? I didn’t, until I heard a radio ad for it and decided to check it out. It turns out that the Department of Aging has existed for 50 years! Their website was a pleasant surprise! It is very thorough in listing available resources and contact information. Their main page showcases categories such as a state master plan on aging (who knew?), grant opportunities, an aging information line, information on the long-term care ombudsman program, and an aging in California resource guide. There is so much information there that one Care Committee Corner can’t contain it all. Do you need help evaluating a long-term care facility? Finding a place to have a nutritious lunch with fellow seniors? Need some support as you care for a loved one? You will most likely find the help you need by utilizing the information on this website. If there is not a specific State resource, they have contact information for aging resources in each California county. In San Diego County, our agency is Aging and Independence Services. Its offices are close to Tierrasanta, in the same complex as the County Registrar of Voters.
Here is the website for the State of California Department of Aging: aging.ca.gov

| | Lessons From The Blue Zones
Members have gathered to watch two of the episodes in the Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones documentary series. Everyone is amazed by how healthy and long lived the people in the Blue Zone regions are and have been investigating ways to adopt some of those healthy habits for themselves.
Thanks to the TVSD Eating Well interest group who has been providing nutrient dense snacks to attendees, including the Sardinia Minestrone Soup, a staple in the diet of residents in that Blue Zone. The group also learned about and taste tested the Okinawan purple sweet potato and the Japanese red sweet potato, both with much higher nutrient levels than the typical orange sweet potato and are overwhelmingly more nutritious than a typical white or yellow variety. All of these additional nutrients feed our bodies properly, helping us avoid cognitive issues and disease.
There are two more episode showings on September 6th and September 16th. All showings are 2-3 p.m. Each episode stands alone, so you do not need to attend every viewing to take part overall.
There are now two televisions in the VMC so there is plenty of viewing space from the top level for anyone who would prefer to not go downstairs. Register on the TVSD Event Calendar for either or both of the upcoming showings. | New Monthly Event - Mah Jongg 2
