| President's Message
Sue and I find it unbelievable how fast September slipped away. I believe in the saying “Time flies when you are having fun.” I can only assume we really enjoyed September. I hope all of you found September to be productive and fun filled. Having written that, I know not everyone can look back at September with a smile.
When life is not going well for one of our Village members, know the rest of us are here for you. Our Care and Wellness Committee oversees assisting members when in need. They have a history of offering educational opportunities, putting together forums and providing information of where resources within the community can be found. It is not always easy to ask for help; however, we encourage anyone in need to reach out to other members. You may be surprised at how understanding and helpful our members can be.
Cassandra has been doing an awesome job attracting Supporting Partners! Though their financial support is vital to our mission, as important are the services and resources they have available to our members. Please take the time to read and learn about the many offerings these wonderful people and organizations can offer. Thank you Cassandra!
The Board is in the process of gathering feedback, ideas and suggestions of what services our members expect to need in the future. The primary method will be meeting with the neighborhood groups. If you are unable to attend the meeting of your neighborhood, please consider attending one of the other neighborhood meetings. Cassandra can let you know where and when they are meeting. We are hoping to get 100% of our members to respond to this survey.
If you are unable to attend one of the meetings, please contact Cassandra who will arrange for you to complete the survey. Thank You to all of our many members who are participating in this initiative!
This Bill Gates quote says it well; “We all need people who will give us feedback; That’s how we improve.”

Blue Zone Graduates
Congratulations to all of the Village members who completed the Blue Zone Challenge! Blue Zones are regions in the world with the healthiest, longest-living populations, and the Blue Zone Challenge empowers everyone, everywhere to live better, longer.
Tierrasanta Village members shared Blue Zone recipes at each meeting where together they watched an episode of the Netflix series: "Live to 100, Secrets of the Blue Zones". For the final viewing, members celebrated with sheep's milk cheese and cannonau wine from Sardinia, Italy, a wine known for its extremely high level of antioxidants.
The Blue Zone Challenge is not a fad diet, or even a diet at all. Blue Zones tend to be in areas less touched by modern technology. Residents still mostly walk instead of driving. They naturally move more throughout the day performing activities like tending their vegetable gardens, cooking from scratch and chopping wood. In America we often sit at a desk all day and then in a car when we commute. Dishwashers, robot vacuums, gas stoves and conveniently packaged food allow us free time which we often spend in front of a TV screen.
The most important difference though may be the diets of Blue Zone residents. They eat more nutrient dense foods, zero processed foods, and very little table sugar. They may have no idea what a Triscuit or packaged deli meat even looks like.
There is clear evidence now that our diets directly affect cognition as well as our general risk for disease. You can learn how to harness important nutritional knowledge in a two-part educational series on October 18th and November 1st:
Eating for Energy & Longevity - Clinical Nutritionist Tara Coleman will join us for a two-part series focused on energy and longevity. She will teach us how simple tweaks we can make to our nutrition can have a significant impact on cravings and how much energy we have each day. With a special focus on blood sugar and cognition, you will walk away with actionable steps to apply this knowledge to your own life. Be sure to come with questions because we will have plenty of time for Q&A!
Tara Coleman is a Clinical Nutritionist in private practice for almost 20 years. She has been featured on CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN and Forbes as a nutrition expert. Her talks are known for being engaging and actionable. She believes strongly that healthy food only works if you eat it…so it better be delicious!
This is a two part series with presentations on 10/18 & 11/1. You can attend both sessions or either depending on your availability. Please register for all sessions that you are able to attend.
| | Monthly Member Meeting
The "Don't Get Hooked - Stop Scams" presentation at last month's Member Meeting was excellent! Thanks to member Mark Lasky for coordinating that helpful presentation. This is the link to the District Attorney's webpage where you can find the "Stop Scams Tool Kit" and other useful information.
Be sure to register here for the next Member Meeting on October 7th. The special guest presenter will be Israel Hernandez, from AARP. He is currently the Associate State Director of Advocacy for AARP and will share an overview of its numerous resources, services and initiatives. Israel lives in San Diego and is very interested in the Village movement. He will speak to us for about 20 minutes and then stay for the rest of our meeting to learn more about TVSD. | Care Committee Corner
Are You Hydrated? What You Eat Can Help!
Most of us do not drink enough water per day. And though we grew up hearing that we should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, more recent guidelines suggest that men should drink about 3.2 quarts (12.8 cups) and women about 2.3 quarts (9.2 cups) per day. We hear all the time how important it is to stay hydrated. After all, up to 60% of our bodies is water. Water is essential to our health. It allows our cells to grow, reproduce, and survive. It regulates our body temperature through sweating and respiration. It acts as a shock absorber for our brain and spinal cord. It powers our digestion systems, and it helps deliver oxygen all over our bodies. With such important functions at stake, we should want to drink enough water, but we don’t. Water can be boring to drink when there are so many more flavorful beverages available. Also, our thirst sensation diminishes as we age, so we may not feel like drinking water. What to do to ensure we stay hydrated? One thing we can do is EAT! Before you head to the refrigerator, not all eating will help you stay hydrated. There are certain foods that contain high percentages of water, and they will help you stay hydrated. Here is a list of 13 of those foods, and the percentages of water they contain:
1. Cucumber (96%) 2. Iceberg Lettuce (95%) 3. Tomato (95%)
4. Celery (95%) 5. Ice Pops (94%) 6. Bell Peppers (92-98%)
7. Mushrooms (88-92%) 8. Soup/Broth (92-98%) 9. Watermelon (91%)
10. Apples (84-85%) 11. Grapes (78-80%) 12. Plain Yogurt (81-87%)
13. Carrots (88-89%)
Of course, there are plenty of vitamins in most of these (not sure about the ice pops!), so there are other benefits besides hydration in this list. Checking the list, it looks like you could eat a salad or soup with lots of vegetables, and have an ice pop for dessert, to help with your hydration. There is much more to learn about water, hydration, and nutritional benefits of high-water-content foods in the two articles I’ve listed below. Stay hydrated - it’s important!

| | Harmony Home Medical Event
A big thank you to Harmony Home Medical for the social hour they recently sponsored! It was wonderful getting to know our new TVSD Supporting Partner, owner Erica Sell, and mingle with fellow villagers.
Erica helped attendees understand the challenges they may encounter in their homes and the technology available to help them age comfortably and safely in place. Attendees had a chance to register for a complimentary home assessment.
The assessment will include a safety inspection, alerting members to areas that may need additional lighting or grab bars to avoid a potentially devastating fall. This assessment can also answer questions about the feasibility of home modifications such as stair lifts or walk-in showers. Harmony Home Medical has a team of contractors and can assist with all construction plans and design decisions.
Erica is offering the assessment year round to villagers as a member discount. If you haven't already registered for the complimentary assessment, please reply to this email or contact the Village Front Desk for assistance. | Social Committee Updates
Thank you to all the members who attended our Bingo Happy Hour on September 27th and congratulations to the 10 raffle winners! A special shout out to Diana Keyes and her committee who helped plan and set up for the event and a big thank you to all the members who helped put away the chairs and tables! Once again, teamwork in action!

Village Movement Conferences
Four village members attended the statewide Village Movement California Conference in La Jolla in September. The programming was great, but the networking with other villages was even better! Later in the month, five members attended the national Village to Village Network Conference. Again, the programing was great. There was less networking because it was a two day online conference, but attendees brought back good information to help TVSD meet future goals.
This is a great time for all members to get more involved with TVSD volunteer opportunities. Village leadership is currently considering new Board members and both the Social Team and the Front Desk are looking for members who have experience in those areas. Please reply to this email or call the Front Desk if you have interest in learning more about ways to get more involved with TVSD! It's a wonderful way to give back and even better way to make close friends within the village. | Holiday Giving
This holiday season Tierrasanta Village will be taking part in the Elderhelp Holiday Angel giving campaign. The TVSD Community Outreach team had a great idea - to use Raise Right to purchase all of the gift cards, so that the gifting campaign will double as a fundraiser for our village.
If you do not yet have a Raise Right account, please consider creating one. The holidays are right around the corner and every gift card you purchase can equal fundraising dollars for TVSD! Raise Right information can be found at this link or call the Village Front Desk for more information
If you do not have an account and do not want to set one up, the Community Outreach team Sheila Weiner (sheilaweiner@att.net) and Marilyn Bente (cinqavenues5@gmail.com) are collecting donated dollars and will purchase the cards through their Raise Right accounts.
