NOVEMBER 2024 NEWSLETTER

President's Message

As we enter the holiday season, your Board of Directors have a busy schedule ahead of them. Speaking of holidays, we will be pulling together plans for our annual holiday luncheon which will be on December 2nd. This is always a wonderful time to gather with your Village friends and celebrate another successful year for the Tierrasanta Village of San Diego.

December is an important month for us financially, as well. I will be sending out a letter in early November to kick off our Annual Donor Appeal. We are blessed to have many generous members who contribute each year. Our Village is an active one as we respond to the needs of members. Our dues have remained at their current level for many years. The success of our Annual Appeal is the primary reason we have been able to keep them where they are. Please think about the impact TVSD has on your life and be as generous as possible.

The Board will be attending their annual retreat on November 14 this year. We have a busy agenda planned as we attempt to understand the future needs of our members and put plans in place to effectively provide services that respond. We will be reviewing our Strategic Plan to assure we are on track, and to make any adjustments deemed appropriate. Board succession will be an extremely important topic of discussion. Our current President, Vice President and Immediate Past President have all agreed to remain in their current position until June 1, 2025. This is good news, as it allows us to plan a smooth transition. We will be meeting with some members to discuss our future leadership needs, answer questions, and encourage them to participate in a leadership role some day. We have a meeting scheduled for November 13. If you have not been invited and are interested in learning more, please let me know.

We will be deciding how best to activate the Advisory Board our Strategic Plan calls for. We envision inviting members within the San Diego community who have experience working with senior populations to join this Board. We expect they will offer our Board of Directors guidance to help us build stronger connections within the community. We are excited that we have already successfully recruited Gretchen Veihl, of Elder Care of San Diego.

The Board will review the results of our member survey asking about the future service needs required by members. With this information, we hope to  pull together a plan that will provide the services identified in the survey.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Old Globe

It was the perfect day for lunch with village friends at the Prado and a matinee production of "Murder on the Orient Express". Good times had by all! Thank you to event host Marilyn Bente for planning this fun outing.

TVSD Holiday Party

The holiday season is upon us and we look forward to celebrating with you on December 2nd.  The event details are listed below and you can register here if you are able to attend. We certainly hope you can join us!

Holiday Giving Update

This holiday season Tierrasanta Village will be taking part in the Elderhelp Holiday Angel giving campaign, delivering $25 Target and Walmart Gift Cards to local seniors. The TVSD Community Outreach team had a great idea - to use Raise Right to purchase all of the gift cards, so that the gifting campaign will double as a fundraiser for our village.

If you do not yet have a Raise Right account, please consider creating one. The holidays are right around the corner and every gift card you purchase can equal fundraising dollars for TVSD! Raise Right information can be found at this link or call the Village Front Desk for more information.

If you do not have an account and do not want to set one up, the Community Outreach team Sheila Weiner (sheilaweiner@att.net) and Marilyn Bente (cinqavenues5@gmail.com) are collecting donated dollars and will purchase the cards through their Raise Right accounts.

Please make your donations before November 8th so that the TVSD Community Outreach Team has time to purchase and deliver the gift cards.

Thank you for supporting Elderhelp & TVSD!

How AI (Artificial Intelligence) May Benefit Seniors

What is AI? The Encyclopedia Britannica, online edition, defines AI as “the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings”. Wikipedia and Google definitions spell it out in easier terms: “a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions, including the ability to see, understand, and translate spoken and written language, analyze data, make recommendations, and more”. You probably use AI daily, when you ask Alexa what the weather is for the day, or ask Siri to send a text for you. You don’t? Then I’m sure you’ve observed someone you know using one of those devices.

Though you might not personally use AI much, there are technologies currently available that may make life easier for all of us, especially seniors. As we age, we all face challenges with mobility and memory. If we are a caregiver, employ a caregiver for a loved one, or use a caregiver to assist us with our daily needs, there are also devices and applications, or “Apps”, which you may download to your smart phone or computer, available to make caregiving easier. Here are some areas in which AI may help you:

*Medication Management and Reminders

Applications (“Apps) such as MediSafe and CareZone send reminders to take your medication. They can also generate reports you can share with your health care provider.

Smart Pill Dispensers: Use AI to dispense the right medication at the right time.

*Monitoring Health and Wellness

Wearable devices with AI, such as the FitBit and Apple Watch can track vital signs and sleep patterns, and detect falls, using AI algorithms.

*Home Safety

Systems which use AI, such as NestCam, can alert caregivers of unexpected activity, or lack of activity if a loved one hasn’t moved for awhile.
Voice Assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa allow older adults to call for help, control lights, and talk to loved ones.

There are even other AI-powered devices and websites to help manage meal planning and nutrition, and mental health support and stress management. Take some time now to utilize the AI on your own smart phone or computer. In the “search” field, enter “Artificial Intelligence and How it Benefits Seniors”. You’ll be surprised and amazed at how much technology and innovation is out there to help you.

Social Committee Updates

The Third Thursday Social group (above) enjoyed a recent get-together at the new KNB Bistro located inside Keg N Bottle on Santo Road. This will likely be the group's new monthly meeting spot. Please note that the start time for this event is changing. Moving forward the social will begin at 4 p.m.

As we head into the new year, the Social Committee has been working with members to select events for 2025. Keep an eye out for an email survey asking you to share your thoughts about which activities should be added to next year's calendar!

Monthly Member Meeting

The next Member Meeting is Monday, November 4th at 3 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In addition to hearing from our TVSD Committee Leaders, Jonathan Schwartz from Partner in Aging will be our guest speaker. Jonathan will share his knowledge and insights regarding long-term care.

After the meeting, members will gather at Gaetano's for dinner. If you are able to attend the meeting, please register here.  Thanks to the village IT Team, this monthly meeting continues to be available via Zoom. The meeting link is listed on the event page

Eating for Energy & Longevity

Thanks to a Community Enhancement grant through the office of Supervisor Joel Anderson, Tierrasanta Village recently welcomed Certified Nutritionist Tara Coleman for an educational presentation. Attendees learned the importance of regulating blood sugar through proper eating and had the opportunity to have all of their nutrition questions answered by an expert. Tara will be back soon for the second part of her presentation "Eating for Energy & Longevity."
