President's Message
Over the past couple of months, the Board of Directors has been busy planning our budget and events for 2025. By the time you read this message, it’s likely our 2025 annual meeting has taken place. Regrettably, we were not able to make the meeting available on Zoom this year. We will work hard to present next year’s meeting on Zoom. If you were not able to attend, please sign onto our website to review the outline of what was talked about. This will offer some insights into what you missed. You are encouraged to speak with any of the Board members to learn more on any of the topics that were presented.
Every time I sign onto the TVSD events calendar, I am amazed at all of the activities taking place. The fact we have only one part-time employee reminds us how important it is our members volunteer their time and talents to make it all happen. Volunteering by our members plays a crucial role in our success. “Volunteering promotes social inclusion by bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds, which fosters mutual understanding and cooperation” * Volunteers benefit as doing so contributes to personal growth by increasing self-esteem, providing a sense of purpose and boosting one’s mental health.
It’s been my experience that TVSD members work well together as we share a common goal. We care about one another and want each of us to remain socially connected, physically strong and emotionally stable as long as possible, while remaining in our homes of choice.
March 7 happens to be Employee Appreciation Day. As important as it is to have our many volunteers, we would be lost without Cassandra’s care, creativity, energy and effectiveness in her important role. Please take a moment to let her know how much we appreciate her commitment to our Village.
March 1 is known as World Compliment Day. While you are in the mindset of thanking Cassandra, why not offer a few compliments to the people surrounding you?
On February 27, the Board will be reviewing the recommendations being presented by our ad hoc committee. They will offer a set of guidelines to define what we can offer for events and services to members who live outside Tierrasanta. I will be sending out an email blast to bring everyone up to date on this topic.
Quote by the author Leo Buscaglia, also known as Dr. Love: “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

| | Calling all TVSD Crafters, Artists, and Bakers...
Our Village is once again participating in this year’s Tierrasanta Patriot’s Day Celebration on Saturday, May 17. We are not only walking in the parade, but we will have a table at the craft fair to display and sell craft items (such as jewelry, cards, quilts, knitted items), art pieces, and homemade baked goods. We are looking for donations from our many talented members as this will be another of our fundraiser efforts. In 2023, we made over $500 at our craft fair booth!
We are letting you know about this event two months early so that you have ample time to prepare your handiwork. If you would like to donate an item or two or 3 or 4, please contact Marilyn Bente (cinqavenues5@gmail.com) to arrange drop off or pick up. We appreciate all of your efforts and donations! Thank you! | Annual Donor Drive
Our Year End Donor Drive raised a total $14,300! These generous donations help ensure that TVSD can continue to provide the events that help older adults in Tierrasanta to age well! Thank you to these additional contributors:

| | Donation Request
TVSD was granted $3340 from the city of San Diego to use towards our first senior resource fair. Most of those funds can be used towards event advertising which will greatly increase TVSD's awareness among Tierrasanta community members.
As part of the grant agreement, Tierrasanta Village must prove that the event was beneficial to attendees. In order to do this, we will conduct a survey at the resource fair to gather attendees’ opinions as well as suggestions for future TVSD resource fairs. To encourage survey completions, TVSD will be raffling off gift baskets as prizes. The completed survey will act as the attendee’s raffle entry.
TVSD is currently accepting contributions for these gift baskets. Donations can be made via cash, check, or Venmo. Cassandra Hanrahan at the Village Front Desk will be handling all raffle basket purchases so please make any checks payable to her. Her Venmo is @Cassandra-Hanrahan and the last four digits of her phone number is 0330. Contributions can be made at the Annual Meeting held on March 3rd at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the large fellowship hall beginning at 3:00 PM. Donations can also be made at the clubhouse 9:30 to 12:30 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Or, you can contact Cassandra at the Front Desk to arrange for pickup of your donation.
There are many ways to help support the first TVSD Resource Fair! In addition to raffle basket donations, we need bakers to provide breakfast goodies that attendees can enjoy at the Tierrasanta Village event check-in tent along with a cup of coffee. There will also be other opportunities for members to donate their time by helping to direct attendees from the main Fellowship Hall to the smaller room where we meet for the Monday meetings. The smaller room will be used for the two presentations offered during the fair.
Thank you so very much for contributing and helping to make our first senior resource fair a huge success! | Honor Flight Letter Writing
One of the highlights of the Honor Flight is “Mail Call” where there is a surprise distribution of cards and letters showing appreciation for all that these veterans have done for our country.
Our Village is going to hold a letter writing campaign to add to the hundreds of letters needed. We are asking you to come and spend some time writing messages of appreciation. The cards and stationary will be provided, we just need lots of volunteers to generously give of their time to pen some thank you notes.
This is an opportunity for some of our “one time” volunteers! Join members at the VMC on Wednesday, March 12, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Please register here and thank you for supporting Honor Flight! | Care Committee Corner
Have You Heard of CaringBridge?
I had not heard of CaringBridge until a recent Care Committee meeting. Doing a little research online, I discovered that it is a non-profit organization that provides a place online for caregivers to update family and friends on the health journey of the one they’re caring for. Not only that, but the person cared for can share their story.
With CaringBridge (and that’s how they spell it, no space between “Caring” and “Bridge”), the caregiver, person cared for, or anyone else concerned creates a “Page”, or online platform, much like a FaceBook page. This allows updates about someone’s health journey to be posted, and all friends and family can see the updates at once. You can imagine the benefits for the caregiver: Less calls. Less emails. Less texts to answer. More time to devote to their loved one, and more time to recharge. Sounds like a great solution to caregiver stress!
Whether you are the caregiver or person on the health journey, you may be interested in checking out the CaringBridge “bookshelf” on their website. They list books by authors who have shared their health journeys, and how using CaringBridge added to their support system.
Some reassuring facts about CaringBridge are that group Pages can be set up as a private page, so only the concerned group can see the posts. In addition, CaringBridge is a Better Business Bureau accredited charity. Find out more on their website, www.caringbridge.org.

| Understanding Hearing Loss
April 4th
1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Dr. Nick Faillace of ChEARS Hearing Center will speak to our group about the serious effects of uncorrected hearing loss in seniors and the importance of getting proper care and counseling. He has specialized in diagnostic testing, tinnitus counseling, hearing aid programming, and vestibular evaluations. He will offer advice about hearing aid care and maintenance and the importance of consistent use. There are many professionals who treat hearing loss and he will define those specific roles. There will be time for questions and answers. Many seniors are reluctant to commit to hearing aids. Dr. Faillace may help ease some of those concerns. Please register. | Volunteer Appreciation Brunch
