President's Message
Another month has flown by and, as usual, Tierrasanta Village has been very active.
Thanks to Cassandra and Marilyn Bente’s efforts, we are attracting new members at a pace ahead of last year. In addition to the ongoing activities that appear on our website’s events calendar, our members have been busy planning for future activities.
Examples include planning for the April 4 Understanding Hearing Loss presentation, and the chat session with UCSD students about Magic Shows, the April 11 PuzzleMania game night, the April 23 Healthy Living Resource Fair, and our annual Volunteers Appreciation Brunch on April 30. Planning is complete for our new walking group who has set May1 as their first walk together at Lake Miramar. Please look up these events on the Events calendar to learn the details and register if you can attend.
In March, a group of volunteers led by Marilyn Bente set a new record. Their thank you notes to Veterans who will be participants in the Honor Flight Program in April totaled 250! Last year they sent about 215, and 185 the year before. What a wonderful initiative to show our appreciation for their service to our country! Thank you to all the note writers. If you have wanted to know more about Artificial Intelligence, I hope you took the opportunity to attend our March 21 seminar entitled “What Is AI?”.
The Healthy Living Resource Fair on April 23 is a huge undertaking for our Village. It is being organized by Cassandra who has done an incredible job pulling everything together. I believe there will be some 20-24 organizations represented at this fair. These are organizations that service the needs of seniors in one way or another. We view this as a wonderful opportunity to provide an important service to our community and to become better known. We expect this will be a great success. Our hope is we can build on this fair, and put it together annually. It would be a fantastic service for us to become known as the provider of information to our seniors and to connect them with service providers.
Please plan to attend and bring as many friends as you can. Registration is required, so remember to visit our website to register.
Thank you all for your time and support of the many activities and events offered by TVSD. It would not all be possible without each of you. Happy Spring Everyone!

| Calling All "Techies"!
Do you have a passion or interest in technology?
Are you that person that can hook up your upgraded cable box or install that new streaming device on your TV?
Are you comfortable sitting in front of your PC or laptop “Zooming” with your friends and family or keeping your other device software up to date?
If any of this describes you, TVSD can provide you with the opportunity to put your “techie self” to good use helping other members!
We are currently looking for volunteers to join our “A/V Squad” – the group within our IT Committee that provides the sound, video and Zoom connectivity (hybrid) for our meetings and presentations.
TVSD strives to provide our membership with the latest and greatest content to help you “age in place”. That’s what we’re all about. We also do our best to include those members who may not be able to attend our meetings and presentations in person.
The A/V Squad plays a critical role in making this all possible. We need more volunteers to be able to continue to develop this important aspect of the TVSD member benefits. Of course, all volunteers will receive appropriate training and orientation to become effective contributors in the future.
If you’re interested in learning more, please contact Cassandra at tierrasantavlg@gmail.com or (858)569-9119.
We hope to hear from you soon!
| | Announcing Partner in Aging's Hospital Advocacy Program!
Dear Friends,
After 20 years of working with older adults, I’ve seen far too many people struggle through the hospital system alone. It seems as though there just aren’t enough doctors, nurses, or social workers to meet the growing need. And the reality is, patients who have an advocate tend to get better care.
About a year ago, a woman I cared deeply about texted me from her hospital bed around 3 AM: “I’m scared. I don’t know what to do.”
She had no emergency contact and no one local to support her. That moment stuck with me—and it’s what led to the creation of our Hospital Advocacy Program.
Since then, dozens of people have joined. For just $10/month, we provide:
On-site hospital visits within 12 hours
Help choosing the right nursing home or rehab facility
Support transitioning safely back home or into senior living
Advocacy every step of the way—with no extra charges during the time of need
And most importantly, we serve as your experienced emergency contact
We’ve caught medication errors, ensured families were contacted, helped get second opinions, and made sure proper discharge plans were in place. Sometimes, it’s about being there to ask the right questions—or just to ask for a warm blanket, a glass of water, or someone to check in.
But here’s the catch—this only works if you're enrolled before a hospitalization. Once you're in the ER, it’s often too late to get things in place fast enough. So, please sign up today and don't put this off till tomorrow.
If you, a loved one, a friend, or a neighbor could benefit from expert support, I’d be so grateful if you’d pass this along. We’ve made it easy to join, and we stay connected—hosting quarterly check-in calls or in-person visits to keep up with our members' health changes.
Sign up or learn more here
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly. I’m always happy to talk.
All my very best,
Jonathan Schwartz

| Intergenerational Opportunities
The Intergenerational Club (IGC) at UCSD is again offering our Village opportunities to interact with university students. During the past three years, they have provided tech help on Saturday mornings for our members who have had problems or who simply have questions about smart phones and watches, laptops, tablets, and computers. If you have participated in any of these tech sessions, you know how competent and generous these students are. They have also offered book discussions and chat sessions on Zoom. Their president, Sarah Huyn, has proposed two more opportunities for us. One is an entertaining “magic show”, scheduled on April 4, and the other is an informational presentation about AI (artificial intelligence) to be presented on April 18. Both of these events will be on Zoom; details and the link can be accessed on our website’s registration page.
Please consider participating in these activities. Their presentations are always well organized, informative, and enjoyable!

What Is Vertigo?*
It’s not just an Alfred Hitchcock movie. It’s a symptom of certain medical conditions. Those who experience it may feel as if the room is spinning, and may also feel nauseous. If you aren’t dizzy from a carnival ride, and wonder what is causing that spinning sensation, it may be one of the following medical conditions:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV: Calcium carbonate crystals in your inner ear help you maintain balance. When a sudden head movement displaces those crystals, vertigo may ensue. This is BPPV.
Vestibulopathy: This is a malfunction of the vestibular system (the system in your inner ear which controls balance) in only one ear. When this happens, your head perceives motion when there is none.
Migraines: There are vestibular migraine headaches, marked by dizziness, pain, and light-headedness.
Inner Ear Infection: Inflammation of the inner ear caused by infection can cause vertigo.
There are different treatments for each type of vertigo, from head movements to medications. It’s wise to consult your physician if you experience vertigo. Your physician can recommend the proper treatment, and determine if your vertigo is a symptom of something more serious. It could be a sign of many conditions, including Meniere’s disease (fluid build-up in the inner ear), a tumor, or an acoustic neuroma.
As always when reading your Care Committee Corner, remember that your Care Committee members are not your physicians. If you are experiencing vertigo, please seek information from your own physician.

- Joan McGeachy, TVSD Care Committee | Volunteer Appreciation Brunch
Volunteer Appreciation Brunch on April 30th beginning at 10:30 a.m.
YOU ARE INVITED …………..
TO HONOR AND THANK YOU, OUR TVSD VOLUNTEERS,
BECAUSE YOU MAKE OUR VILLAGE THRIVE!
Please join us at our VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION BRUNCH:
When? Wednesday, April 30th 10:30 am
Where? Fellowship Hall, Tierrasanta Lutheran Church
What? A light morning brunch, fun drawings, time to socialize,
and an opportunity to show our volunteers how
grateful we are for their time and energy
TVSD is a member-run organization, and as such, we rely on our volunteers to create programs, to care for each other, and to build community. We are grateful for each and every volunteer! Thank you all who make the Village -- and Tierrasanta -- a vibrant place to live. Let’s all come together to recognize our volunteers. And if you have not been able to volunteer this year, for whatever reason, please join in the celebration to applaud and to personally thank those who have volunteered. Registration required before 4/26.
| Care Committee Presentation
April 4th
1:00 - 2:30 p.m.
Ensure that you will not be negatively impacted by future hearing loss by understanding its effects. There's still time to register for this important topic! This event will be available via Zoom in addition to in person at the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Dr. Nick Faillace of ChEARS Hearing Center will speak to our group about the serious effects of uncorrected hearing loss in seniors and the importance of getting proper care and counseling. He has specialized in diagnostic testing, tinnitus counseling, hearing aid programming, and vestibular evaluations. He will offer advice about hearing aid care and maintenance and the importance of consistent use. There are many professionals who treat hearing loss and he will define those specific roles. There will be time for questions and answers. Many seniors are reluctant to commit to hearing aids. Dr. Faillace may help ease some of those concerns. Please register. | Time Bank Update
Spring is here! Have any upgrade or fix-it projects in mind?
Life has changed and our friends and family don’t always live nearby. It’s not often easy to ask someone for help, especially if that brings with it a feeling that we can never ‘pay them back'. Timebanking is a fun, unpressured, and informal way for a mutual exchange of help. Check the offers; there is a variety to choose from in categories of home help, transportation, gardening, and assistance in use of computers.
New TVSD members please join the Time Bank. We would value your time and talents! Please feel free to contact member Carmela Cavero (carmelacavero@gmail.com) for any questions or assistance in managing your Time Bank membership. |

In any language …… THANK YOU ………
To all of you who contributed in any way to our successful letter writing campaign for the Honor Flight “Mail Call”.
We sent 250 cards and notes towards this project, up from 210 thank you messages to our veterans last fall. I am so grateful for all of the cards and notepaper donated, not only by our members, but by their friends and neighbors. Too many to name here! Such an outpouring!
But I would like to recognize our members who actually wrote those 250 messages of appreciation: Claire Blum, Laurie Brown, Jo Carle, Linda Juhasz, Becky Lunneberg, Bradlyn Mulvey, Mike Sisson, Ginny Van, Susan and Ken Ross, and Fran Zweibel.
Upon receipt of our box of cards, the coordinator of the Honor Flight “Mail Call”, Donna Hester, wrote these words of appreciation:
“Your box of wonderful cards arrived today. We always love the cards designed and penned by your organization. Thank you ….. Thank you!”
Thank you all again!

This year's Parade, Craft Fair & Tierrafest is Saturday, May 17th. We need plenty of TVSD members to represent us by walking in the parade. Furry friends welcome! More info coming soon. | Calling all TVSD Crafters, Artists, and Bakers...
TVSD will not only be walking in the parade, but we will have a table at the craft fair to display and sell craft items (such as jewelry, cards, quilts, knitted items), art pieces, and homemade baked goods. We are looking for donations from our many talented members as this will be another of our fundraiser efforts. In 2023, we made over $500 at our craft fair booth!
We are letting you know about this event early so that you have ample time to prepare your handiwork. If you would like to donate an item or two or 3 or 4, please contact Marilyn Bente (cinqavenues5@gmail.com) to arrange drop off or pick up. We appreciate all of your efforts and donations! Thank you!
