 | President's Message
This is a wonderful, thought provoking quote by Pope Francis:
“Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are all born to help each other. No matter how difficult it is…Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.”
He offers us a way to live our lives. If everyone embodied this believe, what a wonderful world we would live in. As we can’t control much of what goes on around us, it is good we recognize we can have an impact within our community.
Tierrasanta Village of San Diego’s members understand the value of and the benefits of assisting and caring for others. We are blessed to have so many of you that are willing and able to give back to others. With the wide variety of events and programs we sponsor, there is always a way one can contribute.
How about that Senior Resource Fair on April 23rd?! It was an amazing success. Thank you to Cassandra for all of her energy and expertise in pulling it together. We received only positive feedback while fostering many new relationships. This will become an annual event.
This will be my last newsletter message as President of the TVSD Board of Directors. As I have expressed a few times, I love what this organization is about. I am impressed by how many members give of their time and talents to assure the long term viability of the Tierrasanta Village. It has been a pleasure to work with so many committed volunteers.
Because I believe in TVSD’s mission and believe we are on the right track, I will continue to serve on the Board as its Immediate Past President. Let’s continue to work together to help one another age well in place, for as long as possible. Thank you to Ginny Van for agreeing to step into the President’s role as of June 1st. I expect and believe everyone will offer her support, as you have done for me.
We have a good thing going here at TVSD. Let’s keep it moving forward!
Thank you,
Ken Ross
TVSD Board President | Senior Resource Fair
A big thank you to everyone who attended and all who volunteered in many different ways to help make this event such a success. Excellent feedback has been received from our members, non-members, exhibitors and supporting partners. The presenters, Clinical Nutritionist, Tara Coleman and Harmony Home Medical Supply CEO, Erica Sell, did a great job as well. TVSD can look forward to the Senior Resource Fair as an annual event in Tierrasanta!
|
Thanks also to all of the event sponsors for helping to make TVSD's first Resource Fair a great one!
| | A Visit From Councilmember Campillo
It was wonderful having Councilmember Campillo at the Senior Resource Fair to address the attendees. Tierrasanta Village President, Ken Ross, Vice President, Ginny Van Benthuysen and Past President, Marilyn Bente, welcomed the Councilmember upon his arrival.
Our event was mentioned in the Councilmember's weekly email series:
Connecting Older Adults with Needed Resources
On Wednesday morning, I attended Tierrasanta Village’s first ever Senior Resource Fair, which gathered healthcare, legal, community, and social resources for seniors. Events like this play a critical role in helping seniors stay connected to essential services, especially as the cost of living and age-related expenses continue to rise.
I’m grateful I had the chance to visit the fair, which I proudly funded through the Community Projects, Programs and Services (CPPS) Funding Program. An enormous thank you to the leadership at Tierrasanta Village, the sponsors, and volunteers who brought this event to life.
This email series is called the 'Raul Roundup.’ I'll be sending along a few things I'm seeing online, reading about in the news, and doing as your City Councilmember. These fun, informative, and short emails will arrive straight to your inbox every Friday.
All the best,
Raul
P.S. Feel free to forward this email to a friend, family member, neighbor, colleague, etc., who might find this Roundup interesting or informative. And if you’re the person who has been forwarded this email, you can subscribe here!
The Tierrasanta community is certainly fortunate to have Councilmember Campillo and his dedicated team supporting our neighborhood!

Social Committee Update
PuzzleMania was a great success this year, with 38 attendees. Tied for First Prize was Melinda McGlinn & Thom VanBenthuysen with the highest score. Second prize winner was Marilyn Millikan. Puzzlemania was hosted by Diana and Jay Keyes. Again this year, the Keyes created fun and sometimes challenging new puzzles. All players had a great time and enjoyed the team work in solving the puzzles. The event’s success could not have happened without the work and time put in by the Puzzlemania aka Puzzlehead team members. Our Volunteers are essential to continue having these fun events. Thank you volunteers!

Spring Has Sprung, and So Have Our Spring Allergies!*
With Spring upon us, the trees and flowers are blooming. When they bloom, plants release pollen into the air to fertilize other plants. Pollen is the biggest cause of the sniffling and sneezing we may experience this time of year. If you experience Spring allergy symptoms, your body’s immune system mistakenly reacts to the pollen in your nose as a danger. Your immune system releases chemicals called histamines into the blood, and the itchy eyes and runny nose are triggered. It’s not just the plants in your immediate area that are the culprits, as pollen can travel for miles on a breezy day.
There are some trees and grasses that are more likely to cause allergies than others. Some of the trees common to this area are oak, olive, palm, pine, sycamore, and willow. Grasses and weeds that cause allergic reactions include: bermuda, fescue, perennial rye, and saltgrass. These are just a few examples.
You may notice that your local weather report gives pollen counts in the Spring. High pollen counts are more likely on breezy days, and lower on rainy days.
What can you do to mitigate your Spring allergy symptoms? First, you may want to check with your doctor. They can test for specific allergens and recommend treatment. Treatments may include over-the-counter remedies. Second, you can modify your habits to minimize allergic reactions. Keep your doors and windows closed when the pollen counts are high. Use an air purifier and clean your home air filters often. Wash your hair and face often, also. Pollen can collect on you, as well as your home.
If Spring allergies are bothering you, don’t despair—it will be summer before we know it!

Volunteer Tech Help
Member Dick Benton is offering tech support help to Villagers:
"No matter what anyone tells you, I am NOT a miracle worker! I can’t fix everything! But I HAVE got a pretty good record of helping with “techie” stuff like computer problems, Internet access, email, etc., and small appliance repair. With regard to repairing things, my promise is always to return it no worse than when you gave it to me. Your only expense is if it needs some part -- I’ll let you know in that case. Computer-wise – my expertise is definitely focused on Windows and Android devices, but have had some successes with Apple devices. More importantly, I consider myself very good at finding answers online! So, if there’s anything you think I might be able to help you with, send me an email at TINKERER.DICK@GMAIL.COM Please put “HELP” as the first word in the subject, so it’ll jump out at me between all the Spam!"
Thanks Dick for helping us with our tech troubles! | | Idea Bank
A message from Member Carol Lee, who is leading the TVSD Idea Bank:
- Do you have an idea for a new village activity? Contact me (cleeameritech@gmail.com) and I will see who else is interested. I'm happy to help get activities started!
- Several members have suggested that TVSD have a recycling program to utilize when we host events away from the VMC where recycling is not an option. Help me design a recycling plan! Please contact me with your ideas.
- Friendly reminder: the TVSD Dog Pack meets one-hour monthly at 10:30AM on a Saturday in a member's backyard. All members are welcome even if you don't currently have a pet. Simply stop by and enjoy a leisurely conversation with friends. | "This is Your Life" Returns
“This is Your Life 4.0” is a series of monthly workshops and feedback. Each meeting will deal with a new aspect of the things you need to prepare for now so that your survivors can handle your estate without going to probate court. Even if you haven’t completed your estate planning, you can still do this series of workshops. And, if you started the planning but didn’t finish, you are welcome to join us.
Save these dates! The meetings will be held 1-2:30PM on the last Friday of the month; May 30th, June 27th, July 25th and August 29th. Registration is now open here for the first meeting on May 30th. |
