 | President's Message
Have you ever read the “Five Lessons in Teamwork from Geese?” I’ll share the first lesson. (1) Supporting Each Other: When geese fly, they fly in a V formation. As each goose flaps its wings it provides lift for the geese that are behind, making it easier for them to fly longer distances. When the leader goose gets tired, they rotate a fresh goose into the lead position. It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing the leadership. As with these geese, we are interdependent on each other’s skills, capabilities, talents and resources. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another with cooperation and teamwork. I am a true believer of teamwork.
In our efforts to provide our membership with whatever is needed to help us “age in place,” one of our goals is to include members who may not be able to attend our meetings and presentations in person. Our IT Committee, chaired by Mark Lasky, plays a critical role in making this happen by setting up and operating our A/V equipment to facilitate hybrid meetings. I personally am thankful because I’m often called to help our younger daughter in Fullerton on Mondays and can’t be available in person.
Back to teamwork! With the increase in guest speakers and other educational presentations, the demand for these hybrid events continues to increase. Unfortunately, we currently have inadequate volunteers for our “A/V Squad” to cover all the events that you, the members, would like to have available for remote participation. You may recall in the April Newsletter we made an appeal to the membership for volunteers. This yielded little success. So, we’re revisiting this appeal in the hope that those members who are interested and able will step up to help your Village offer as much content as possible to those members who are unable to attend events in person. Our IT Committee will train volunteers who are willing to be part of this vital team. If you are willing to help (or know of someone who could help), contact Mark (mark.lasky@att.net /630-290-9992) or Cassandra at the front desk (tierrasantavillage.org /858-569-0119).
Thank you to all our members who volunteer their time to participate and help! I urge every member to stay informed by reading your emails, including the monthly Newsletter. Come to our General Meeting on the first Monday of the month! Check out our Village calendar and sign up to join the fun!
Cheers to a sunshiny, making memories kind of July!

| | Supporting Partner Wedeking Law
The TVSD Supporting Partner Program began in early 2024 and our village now has wonderful relationships with many partners, all experts in their respective fields supporting older adults. Each year TVSD works with every partner to create joint initiatives to support village members as well as older adults throughout the community. At the end of the year, partners can choose to continue their relationship with TVSD.
Steve Wedeking of Wedeking Law was one of our first Supporting Partners and is happy to continue our partnership for another year. TVSD is grateful for his expertise in the area of Estate Planning and his commitment to support our members. Steve has worked with many villagers, offering to review their current estate planning documents at no cost and advising members of needed changes. Often, village members find that their documents are in good order. If changes are needed or an alteration could help provide more protection or savings, Steve is always happy to help. If your documents have not been updated in 3 years, Stave recommends having them reviewed. Steve is available to assist members at any time and can be reached at 619-663-8428 or info@wedekinglaw.com.
You can hear directly from Steve as part of the TVSD Summer Speaker Series. More details about the speaker series is listed later in this newsletter.
Thanks to Wedeking Law for its ongoing support of Tierrasanta Village! | | Supporting Partner Senior Advisory Council
The Senior Advisory Council (SAC) will also continue their partnership for another year! TVSD is grateful to have SAC as a Supporting Partner and looks forward to continue working together to support seniors in San Diego. The advisors will visit Tierrasanta Village this month as part of the Summer Speaker Series.
SAC offers members a special discount: One hour no fee “ASK THE EXPERT” Zoom call with up to four SAC advisors. You don't have to wait until July 16th to learn more and can research all of the group's advisors at www.senioradvisorycouncil.com.
| Summer Speaker Series
These events are free and open to the public. All presentations will be held at the Tierrasanta Seventh-day Adventist Church at 11260 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. San Diego 92124. Registration is suggested. To register, go to tierrasantavillage.org and view the Activities Calendar. Or, RSVP to tierrasantavlg@ gmail.com/858-569-9119.
July 16th – Senior Advisory Council, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Senior Advisory Council (SAC) is a group of dedicated professionals located in San Diego County who provide long term care planning needs for asset preservation, aging in place and general end of life solutions for seniors and their families…. BEFORE it is truly needed! On July 16th, attendees will have a chance to “ASK THE EXPERTS” and to connect with SAC advisors after the event to ask specific questions.
July 30th – Partner in Aging, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Care Coordinator and Founder of Partner in Aging, Jonathan Schwartz, will share the ways Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help older adults to live safely and independently. Technology like ChatGPT already helps to make sense of laboratory test results and self-driving cars are the norm in some parts of the country. What does the future of AI hold? Robots to do the dishes and take out the trash! Hard to believe, but it’s true.
August 1st – Steve Wedeking, Wedeking Law 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Through this estate planning seminar, learn what all seniors should know about Wills, Estate Planning, Health Care Documents, and Asset Protection. Learn about the 4 essential components of a comprehensive estate plan and whether you need a will, a trust, or both to protect your family and safeguard your assets. A second presentation is available online via Zoom on August 1st 5:30-7:00 p.m. To register for this online event, go to https://wedekinglaw.com/thevillage2025/.
August 6th – Amanda Huerta Benefits Consulting, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Amanda Huerta is a local Medicare Agent who lives and works in Tierrasanta. During her Medicare presentation, Amanda will explain the different parts of Medicare, Medicare costs and what Medicare does and does not cover. She will also walk you through signing up for Medicare for the first time or making changes during Open Enrollment and Special Enrollment periods. After the presentation, Amanda will answer any questions you may have and be able to set appointments to go over your individual Medicare Options.
August 25th – Edward Jones & Partner in Aging, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.
Financial Advisor, Robert Farwell, and Care Coordination expert, Jonathan Schwartz, have designed a workshop to help older adults plan for their care as they age. This workshop will help to answer the questions: What do I need to age independently in my preferred residence? How do I avoid burdening my children with my care? Which financial planning opportunities are available to help make my goals a reality? Attendees should bring their questions. There will be plenty of time for Q&A.

July Member Meeting
Our guest presenter at this month's meeting will be TVSD's newest Supporting Partner, Amanda Huerta with Amanda Huerta Benefits Consulting. Amanda has been in the Insurance Industry for 6 years now and is partnering with us to help with all of your Medicare questions and needs. Medicare can be very confusing when it comes to the different options that you have, the providers that you use and understanding what you have to pay out of pocket, not to mention those constant annual changes!
Also joining us at this meeting is the owner of Brave Wellness in Tierrasanta, Denise Alba. Denise will tell us about the health/wellness classes, community events, and psychotherapy services offered through her business.
A third guest at our meeting will be Mark Gregson, the recipient of many of our thank you notes and letters during the “mail call” of his Honor Flight experience. He contacted us and asked for an opportunity to personally address our villagers and thank them for all those notes and cards. He is a retired navy pilot, a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Please bring your name badge to the Member Meeting along with non-perishable food items for the Seventh-day Adventist ongoing Food Drive - thank you.
Join members after the meeting at Gaetano's Restaurant for dinner!

| Care Committee Corner
Our Village Care Committee leadership is well aware of the fact that today’s culture has stopped freely giving the right to grieve. We no longer outwardly grieve as other cultures still do. We no longer wear black for extended periods of time. Rather than staying at home and shutting out the world and its demands, we are advised to stay active, get involved, make new friends. The author Geraldine Brooks has written that we no longer take the time to “remember the love and to feel the immensity of loss.” That is why our Care Committee offers a time for those members who are grieving to come together to discuss and share our loss, whether it is a recent loss or a death from 20 years ago; whether it is from the death of a parent, sibling, spouse, dear friend, or a beloved pet. We still feel the pain and need that catharsis.
We have been blessed to have Village member Ken Licht, retired minister of the Tierrasanta Lutheran Church, facilitate our grief support sessions. He asks just the right questions for reflection and to motivate the discussion. His warmth and peaceful demeanor are the result of his many years of comforting and counseling his parishioners in times of sorrow. These qualities make for a very comfortable session where we have felt free to talk about and share our grief.
Our next grief support session will be held Thursday, July 17, at the clubhouse, starting at 1:00. Please contact Marilyn Bente if you would like to attend.
“Grief is praise,” writes Martin Prechtel in his book The Smell of Rain on Dust, “because it is the natural way love honors what it misses.”
