MAY 2026 NEWSLETTER

President's Message

Welcome to May! May is a month of sunshine, blooming flowers, and endless possibilities. I am a true believer in the power of positive thinking and, as your president, I see endless possibilities for members to get involved with all that is happening in our Village.

May 16th our Village is participating in the Tierrasanta’s Patriot’s Day Parade! We need walkers! It’s a short walk from the high school to the library and it’s fun!!! We wave, throw out candy, and squirt bubbles at the kids watching along the sidelines. Walk with your pet if you’d like. PLEASE consider joining us!!! After the walk we can visit the craft fair and/or get a bite to eat! Then in the afternoon and evening there is Tierrafest with food and drink as well as games and fireworks. It’s a great time to socialize with friends while supporting the community.

Another way to support our community is to attend the Fire Station 39 Open House on Saturday, May 9 from 1:00-3:00 PM. You will see where our firefighters live, train and respond to emergencies. Hot dogs and soda will be available for a $5 donation, in support of needed updates to their station. Our Village has been asked to support this community event by attending as well as donating baked goods. Look for more information via emails from the front desk.

Visit our May calendar. Try something new. Support leaders who organize events. There is a singalong with the Village vocals, neighborhood group gatherings, exercise classes, golf, bridge, book club, lunch bunch, men’s Java and Jive, UCSD Tech Help and a Member Forum called: Sleep Disturbances Don’t Have to be Part of Aging.

Did you know that your time to help with or attend a Village event or activity can reduce stress, combat depression, increase confidence, make us happy and give us a sense of purpose? It is my hope that you will look at the Village calendar and sign up to be a part of all that is happening this month.

Our new tagline on our logo is “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.”
That’s what we do – in so many ways. Let’s participate and celebrate our Community, Connection and Aging Well Together.

Living Well 65+ Resource Fair Recap
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Living Well 65+ Resource Fair! It was a wonderful morning filled with helpful resources, great conversations, and a strong sense of community.

Attendees had the chance to connect with local organizations offering support with health, wellness, transportation, home safety, and more, all designed to help older adults stay independent and thrive.

A big thank you to all of our volunteers who gave their time, energy, and support to make this event possible, and to everyone who donated items, resources, and assistance to help everything come together. We truly couldn’t have done it without you.

We’re also so grateful to our partners, volunteers, and sponsors who helped make this event a success, and a special thank you to Councilmember Raul Campillo’s office for their continued support.

Be sure to enjoy photos from member Mike Rigdon here: https://rigdon.smugmug.com/TVSD-Resource-Fair-2026

We look forward to seeing you next year!

Volunteer Appreciation

Our Volunteer Appreciation Event was a wonderful way to celebrate the individuals who make Tierrasanta Village so special. We’re grateful for the time and dedication our volunteers bring to supporting our community.

Intergenerational Tech Help

The Intergenerational Club (IGC) at UCSD is again offering our Village opportunities to interact with university students. During the past three years, they have provided tech help on Saturday mornings for our members who have had problems or who simply have questions about smart phones and watches, laptops, tablets, and computers. If you have participated in any of these tech sessions, you know how competent and generous these students are.

They are again offering to help troubleshoot our tech problems with one-on-one advice. We will be meeting on Saturday morning, May 30, at 10:00 until 12:00 noon at the home of Fran and Greg Zweibel. Space is limited, so please register

Village Advocacy & Grant Update

Village members Gunnar Schalin, Cassandra Hanrahan, Bradlyn Mulvey, and Ginny VanBenthuysen recently attended an open house at Supervisor Joel Anderson’s office, where they met his staff and interns, learned more about how the office operates, and helped raise awareness about the Village Movement and its role in supporting older adults.

We are also thrilled to announce that our organization has been awarded Community Enhancement Grant funding through Supervisor Anderson’s office. This support will help us expand our Aging in Place Support Services, making it easier for older adults to remain active, independent, and connected in the homes and neighborhoods they love.

With this funding, we will be able to grow essential services such as transportation, grocery and prescription delivery, technology assistance, home maintenance support, and wellness check-ins.

We are deeply grateful to Supervisor Anderson and the County of San Diego for investing in a stronger, more connected community, and to our Village members for their continued support.

Together, these efforts reflect what our Village is all about: connection, community, and ensuring older adults have the support they need to thrive.

Supporting Partner Spotlight

We are excited to share some great news about one of our valued Supporting Partners.

We are especially grateful to Jonathan Schwartz, Founder of Partner in Aging, for his continued commitment to our mission and his increased level of support. Partner in Aging has elevated its partnership from Gold Level to Diamond Level, reflecting a deeper investment in helping older adults live safely, independently, and stay strongly connected in their communities.

Tierrasanta Village looks forward to creating joint initiatives with Jonathan to further support older adults in living well at home and in their communities.
We are truly grateful for this partnership and the positive impact it will have on older adults in our community.

Time Bank Orientation

By helping one another, we strengthen our community, recognize each other’s skills, and build new friendships. Our Time Bank offers a variety of services to exchange, including minor repairs, cooking, companionship, transportation, and errands.

An orientation to the Time Bank will be offered on May 5th at 3pm in the Villa Monterey Clubhouse. We hope you will join us! Please register.

Upcoming Care Committee Forums

Sleep Disturbances
Friday, May 15th
1:00 PM until 2:30 PM
Are you a senior experiencing difficulties with sleep? Many believe that poor sleep is just part of getting older and that idea may discourage us from seeking help. Lying awake at night can lead to chronic exhaustion as well as many other health problems. In this peer to peer discussion, we will meet and share our sleep issues and empower ourselves with some solutions that have worked for us. Please register.

Fun With Fruit

Fruit is good for you.  I’m sure your parents told you that each time you asked for a cookie and they handed you an apple, and it’s true.  Let’s review some health benefits of fruit.  We’ll get to the fun with fruit after these brief reminders:

High Nutrient Density: Fruit provides essential vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin C (in berries and citrus) for immune function, and potassium (in bananas and apples) for heart health.

Fiber:  Fruit’s high fiber content helps your gut health.  It also makes you feel full, which may aid in weight management.

Low in Calories and Fat:  Fruit is low in calories and fat when compared with high-calorie processed foods.

May Reduce Risk of Disease:  Fruits contain antioxidants and phytochemical that help fight inflammation and may reduce the risk of chronic illnesses.

And now for the fun part:  hybrid fruit! Crosses of two or more fruits create unusual flavors, textures, and appearance.  Here is a list of some, as noted in a Google search of “unusual fruit hybrids”:

Pluots: A cross between plums and apricots.  They’re described as intensely sweet plums with a firmer apricot texture.

Pluerry:  A hybrid the size of a plum with sweetness of a cherry.

Limequat:  A lime/kumquat cross with sweet skin and a tart interior.

Tayberry:  A blackberry/red raspberry hybrid said to be sweeter than a raspberry.

Blood Lime:  A red-colored citrus hybrid of a finger lime and mandarin.

Pineberry: A pineapple/strawberry hybrid described as an albino strawberry with red seeds that tastes like pineapple.

There are many others listed.  I’m not sure how easy it is to find these in our local grocery stores, but I will be on the lookout.  If anyone finds pineberries—the albino strawberries that taste like pineapple, please let us know in a future edition of the Vibes.  I’d love to try one!

May Member Meeting

Don't miss the presenter at the next Member Meeting on Monday, May 4th at 3PM! The presentation will introduce NaviGuide San Diego, a nonprofit care navigation program designed to support older adults and family caregivers as they manage the complexities of aging, health changes, and care planning. Presenter Elizabeth Garcia will share how NaviGuide provides ongoing guidance with understanding care options, coordinating services, navigating insurance and benefits such as Medicare, and identifying next steps after a diagnosis or change in health.

The program offers an affordable monthly subscription model so families can access trusted support over time, rather than only during moments of crisis. They can cancel at any time.

Elizabeth will also briefly highlight ElderHelp’s broader services, including transportation, care coordination support, and volunteer-based programs that help older adults remain independent and connected in the community.

Please bring your name badges and non-perishable food items for the Seventh-day Adventist ongoing Food Drive - thank you!

This is a hybrid meeting so members are welcome to attend in person or online via Zoom. Thank you for registering.
