JULY 2026 NEWSLETTER

 President's Message

Happy July! Thom and I just returned from a cruise through Alaska and the Inside Passage. We were awed by the splendor of the snow-capped mountains, the glaciers and the wildlife. Despite the opportunity to see another part of the world, we were happy to return home and to be back with our friends. When we told people we were from San Diego, we heard “Oh, I love San Diego.”

One of my favorite quotes is: “Everything in life is a choice, even if the only choice we have is the attitude with which we embrace each moment” by Mattie Stepanek. When I made the choice of taking on the presidency for a year, I was questioned why I would make that choice. I believe belonging to an organization is a give and take. Being a committee chairperson, joining the Board, and accepting the presidency is my way of giving back.

My term as your president is almost over so this will be my last newsletter message. Bradlyn Mulvey will take over as president in August. My dedication will continue as I remain on the BOD as Past President. Our vision and mission remain the same, as we keep driving our shared goals forward. I want to express my deepest gratitude for the committee leaders, the staff, and the dedicated volunteers for your efforts and support. We can do so much more together than we can alone. I ask that you extend the same extraordinary support, collaboration, and trust to Bradlyn that you have so generously given to me. She is a long-time dedicated member whom I highly respect. She will represent us well.

What we do in the Village has always been based on the needs and interests of the Village members. Our membership committee organizes informational socials and new member orientations, our neighborhood captains plan get-togethers, and our social team makes sure we have an event each month. The care committee offers member-to-member forums. Members share meals together at Lunch Bunch, SNAP, Romeo and Third Thursday socials. We have a walking group and exercise classes. SO –What are we missing? What else would you like to see on the calendar? What are your needs and interests? Leaders want your input! Come help brainstorm new events and activities. Sign up to attend “Creative Collaboration” on July 24 at the Clubhouse.

I wish you all a safe and enjoyable 4th of July. I look forward to seeing you at our next general meeting on July 6, 3:00 PM at the Clubhouse. We will learn about “Streaming,” from our guest speaker, John Atkinson, from Atkinson Tech Help. These meetings are a great chance to connect with members, learn something new and understand more about what is happening in our Village.

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." – Henry Ford

Cornhole, Pizza & Friendly Competition

Our Pizza and Cornhole Tournament on June 14 was another fun event, with 48 members and guests attending. There was something for everyone! Some members showed off their cornhole skills, while others enjoyed pizza, conversation, and cheering on the competitors from the sidelines. A big thank-you to our wonderful hosts and their volunteer helpers for making the evening such a success!

Congratulations to our tournament champions, Team "Goldfinger", Cassandra and Patrick Hanrahan, who claimed first place after a hard-fought championship match against Team "Men in Black," Jay and Diane Keyes. The final score doesn't tell the whole story, though—earlier in the tournament, the Keyes team handed the Hanrahans a loss, making the championship rematch especially exciting.

Congratulations also to Team "The Green Mile," Patty George and Marilyn Bente, who proudly took home the coveted "Thanks for Playing" award!

Everyone is already looking forward to another tournament. Until then, we'll keep enjoying the fun, friendship, and laughter that make Village events so special.

Creative Collaboration – Planning Small Group Social Events
Friday, July 24th, 2026, 2:00 PM -3:30 PM

The Social Team tries to plan at least one major social event each month, but…perhaps you have other ideas. The goal of this collaborative session is to see what else might be fun to add to our yearly calendar (this year and/or next). Would you like to help plan a small group event such as a theatre outing, a Day Tripper bus trip, an Oasis event or Social Fundraiser (other than a restaurant)? What other events or topics of conversation would you like to see on the calendar? Come help us brainstorm events, activities or topics of conversation from 2:00-3:00 at the Clubhouse. We hope you can join us!

Casual Conversations
Friday, July 31st, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Show and Tell Creations: for Creations Big or Small

Share something you’ve made. Bring the actual object or a photo of it. It could be a piece of artwork, a crocheted item, a poem, a baked treat, a crafted gift, photographs or anything you’re proud of. Then, share the story behind it:
• How your craft started
• What it means to you
• What you learned while making it
• Or just a little memory tied to the creation
It you don’t have anything to share, just come and listen to others share their craft. This is a casual conversation – a friendly, judgment-free space where your work is celebrated, your story is welcomed, and everyone supports each other’s creativity. Let’s make, share, encourage and connect!
Please register and come from 2:00-3:00 at the Clubhouse.

Seniors and sports…they are not mutually exclusive!  Whether or not you participated in sports in your youth, you can still be active in sports in your senior years.  As you age, you may need to take it easier on your joints and muscles, but that doesn’t mean you need to sit on the sidelines.  What are the most popular sports for seniors, and why?  An internet inquiry provided some information.  Here is the list:

Pickleball.  This is a popular hybrid of tennis and ping-pong, played on a smaller court.  It helps hand-eye coordination, improves agility, and provides social interaction.

Swimming.  It provides a full-body aerobic workout, while taking pressure off your joints and spine.

Yoga and Tai Chi.  Both are proven to reduce fall risks and to lower stress.

Cycling.  You can do this on a regular or stationary bike, outside, at home, or in a gym.  It’s great aerobic activity, and you can set your own pace.

Golf.  Golf combines strategy, walking, and upper-body movement.  It promotes balance and brain health.

The internet inquiry was very helpful in suggesting local resources for accessing all of these most popular sports for seniors.

For pickleball, you can find dedicated courts and active leagues at the San Diego Pickleball Center (858-630-8740; sdpicklers@gmail.com) or the Barnes Tennis Center in Ocean Beach (619-221-9000; www.barnestenniscenter.com).

For swimming, our own Tierrasanta Recreation Center pool (858-636-4837;sandiego.gov) is right in our neighborhood.  You may also check out any of the YMCA locations in San Diego (closest: Toby Wells YMCA, 858-496-9622).

For outdoor cycling, we have many dedicated bicycle paths in San Diego County (check out the SANDAG Regional Bike Map on sandag.org).  You may also want to try a stationary bike at the YMCA or your gym.

For golf, you can book tee times and check senior rates at courses managed by The City of San Diego Golf Division (SDCityGolf@sandiego.gov).

A Message from Tierrasanta Fire Safe Council

Red hot embers cause between 60-90% of home fires. Most of the time those embers are caused by wildfires and can be blown by the wind a mile from the wildfire.

Around the 4th of July we worry about fireworks because many produce embers or sparks that can catch leaves, dry vegetation, and homes on fire.  Fireworks even start wildfires! That, plus the danger of severe injury is why all fireworks (even sparklers) are illegal in San Diego except at authorized displays.
San Diego Fire and Rescue created an impactful video.  Check it out, here.

There are options. For the “little ones” an alternative to sparklers are bright “glow sticks” and home-made, colorful paper streamers with ribbons and glitter.

Planning the perfect day: To experience all the holiday activities, find info at SanDiegoMoms.com  You will find parades and special events that kick off the day, well-chosen vantage points that give you incredible views and comfortable viewing experiences, and a complete fireworks schedule so you can plan around showtimes.

Happy 250th anniversary of the founding of America and please have a SAFE 4th of July.

Revisiting Sleep Issues

Following a productive Peer-to-Peer discussion on sleep challenges in May, participants expressed interest in continuing the conversation. This follow-up session will provide an opportunity to share what strategies have worked, discuss ongoing sleep challenges, and learn from one another's experiences.

Whether you attended the first discussion or are joining us for the first time, you're welcome. If you're experiencing sleep difficulties and would like to exchange ideas in a supportive setting, we encourage you to join us.
