SEPTEMBER 2026 NEWSLETTER |
President's Message
September is Fall Prevention Month, and it seems like a good time to talk about something that can have a big impact on our ability to remain independent: preventing falls.
There is something we all want as we grow older—to remain independent, active, and in control of our own lives. We want to stay in our homes, continue doing the things we enjoy, and keep doing as much as we can for ourselves.
A fall can change all of that in an instant. A broken hip, a head injury, or even the fear of falling again can affect our mobility, confidence, and independence.
The good news is that many falls can be prevented, and often it doesn't take major changes. Take a look around your home. Remove loose rugs and clutter, improve lighting, make sure stairs have sturdy handrails, and consider grab bars where they can provide support. Keep frequently used items within easy reach rather than climbing on a chair or stool.
It's also important to pay attention to our bodies. Strength and balance are two of our best defenses against falling. Walking, strength exercises, and balance activities can help us stay steady and confident. If you notice dizziness, weakness, or changes in your ability to walk, don't ignore them—medications, vision problems, and other health conditions can sometimes increase the risk of falling. Talk with your healthcare provider about any concerns.
And don't forget something simple: slow down. Getting up too quickly, turning suddenly, reaching for something, or rushing can throw us off balance. Take a moment to stand, get your balance, and then start walking.
And don't let pride get in the way of safety. A cane, walker, handrail, or other support isn't a sign of weakness. It can be a valuable tool for maintaining independence.
Fall prevention isn't about limiting our lives. It's about protecting our ability to live them.
This month, I encourage all of us to take a fresh look at our homes, our habits, and our health. Find one thing that could cause a fall—and take care of it.
Because preventing a fall isn't simply about avoiding an injury. It's about protecting our independence, our confidence, and the life we want to keep living.
Stay safe, stay strong, and keep doing the things you love.

Fall Prevention Month
Falls are one of the biggest threats to maintaining independence as we age, but many falls can be prevented with greater awareness and a few simple steps.
The San Diego Seniors Community Foundation is organizing an important community event focused on fall prevention, offering practical information to help older adults stay safe, strong, and independent.

| | | Tierrasanta Village - 18th Anniversary
Yes, Villagers, this Month of September 2026 has arrived and with it “a bit of a HOT Temperature Spell”, but I wanted to remind everyone that this month is the 18th Anniversary of Tierrasanta Village!
The vision of the “Tierrasanta Village” began with two local residents Candy Walsh and Susan Deininger in 2008 and is still thriving and reaching for higher goals yearly.
It seems that this time of the month of August, I always have a “lightbulb moment” regarding the Anniversary of the Village and the song “Try to Remember” sung by either Andy Williams or Julie Andrews starts to swirl around in my head!
Congrats to all TVSD members and to the many volunteers and staff. Welcome to all new members!

Social Committee Updates
The Boot Scootin' BBQ was another fun event for the Village. Denise Gregor and her team did an amazing job hosting. Phil’s BBQ provided another delicious meal, along with our own Village members' home baked desserts. The line dancing led by Leslie, our exercise instructor, and the wonderful music created by Mark Lasky were big hits with the crowd.

Friday, September 11th
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Seventh-day Adventist Church
One of the most loving and meaningful gifts you can provide to your heir(s) is to pre-plan (and pre-pay) your funeral/burial expenses. There is a complex array of options to consider, including traditional burial options and alternative environmental options.
Kim Phillips from Dignity Memorial, a TVSD Supporting Partner, will discuss the traditional options, including cremation. After her presentation, Rachel Hensley, Inure Planning, will provide information on newer methods, including aquamation, natural organic reduction, and green burial.
Please register if you are able to attend. | Care Committee Corner
Be An Encourager
Have you noticed that there seems to be a “national day” for almost everything? National Dog Day is August 26th. National Ice Cream Day is July 19th. There is also a National Day of Encouragement. Really! It is September 12th. The day was established in 2007 by President George W. Bush, and is described as “a day to uplift and encourage people to make a positive impact in their lives”.
What is encouragement? Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “the act of encouraging”. Hmm. That definition isn’t helpful, so another way to look at it is as one person infusing or inspiring another person to have courage.
We all benefit from encouraging words from someone else. When you hear, “You can do it!”, “I believe in you!”, or “You can do anything you put your mind to!”, you are more likely to try something new, or to persevere when things get tough. We can encourage ourselves, also. Practice positive self-talk rather than negative! Be an encourager to yourself and others, not just on September 12th, but all year long.
