MARCH 2024 NEWSLETTER

A Message from the Board President

Why did you join Tierrasanta Village of San Diego? Susan and I originally joined as a way to meet new friends in our new neighborhood. I believe some, if not many of you, share this reason. I also believe there are many other excellent reasons our members joined. I understood our mission was to offer services that would help members to age in place. TVSD is focused on offering opportunities to help members sustain a quality of life by sponsoring physical, emotional and mental events and activities.

There is one aspect of TVSD I did not realize existed: that is the amount of volunteering for other organizations our members do on behalf of TVSD. If you look at our calendar of events, you will find members volunteering with the Jewish Family Services, Veterans’ Honor Flight, assisting Afghan refugees, and packing back packs for school children. These are some of an ever growing list. All these, in addition to the volunteering that occurs member to member. Wow!

Volunteering can transform our lives. Jeffrey A. Kottler, PhD, a well-known author and psychologist, wrote, in part “it is through service to others that we can produce transformative changes—not only in those we help, but also within ourselves”. As time moves on, and TVSD leaders continue to implement our Strategic Plan, (You can find this posted on our website) more opportunities to volunteer will become available. I encourage each of you to take advantage. We certainly are blessed with many capable and willing volunteers. Thank you for all you are doing!

Just a quick reminder: Our annual business meeting this year is on March 4, 2024. I hope you are able to attend. You will learn about our progress in 2023, and what a wonderful start we are enjoying in 2024. You do not have to wait for our annual meeting each year to learn what is happening at the Board level. Our Board meetings are open to any member who wishes to attend. We meet at the Village Monterey Clubhouse on the third Thursday of each Month from 1:00-3:00 PM. We meet on Zoom from June through October, so just let us know, and we’ll make arrangements for you to join us. In addition, you will find our minutes posted on the TVSD website, along with our quarterly financial statements. As always, if you have questions about what we are doing, or why, feel free to ask any Board member.

Let me end here with a few quotes from the “Twelve Commandments for Seniors”:
#2 “In Style are the clothes that still fit.”
#6 “On time is when you get there.”
#9 “Lately, you’ve noticed people your age are so much older than you.”
#12 “You still haven’t learned to act your age, and hope you never will!”

Ken Ross
TVSD Board President

Supporting Partner Announcement

The Village Board of Directors is happy to announce that two additional businesses joined the TVSD Supporting Partner Program in February. ES3 Physical Therapy and Partner in Aging provide a wide array of services to their clients in San Diego. Tierrasanta Village is grateful for this support and looks forward to strong partnerships.

You can also learn more about these partners at the ES3 Physical Therapy and Partner in Aging websites.

Visit the TVSD website to see all the details of the Supporting Partner Program. If you know of a service provider that would be an excellent partner for TVSD, please share that information with Cassandra at the Village Front Desk.

Groundhog Day Gala

Thanks to members Jim and Jinny Batterson for another great Groundhog Day Gala - always a fun event!

Join the Next “Dance Party”

Last month we held our first TVSD “Dance Party”. Eight Village members came together and enjoyed free-style dancing at the clubhouse. We put on some music from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s and danced to our own beat, to our hearts’ content. We did versions of the twist, the jerk, the stroll, the cha-cha and even worked in some of the aerobic moves from our exercise classes! We moved to the Bee Gees, the Beach Boys, the Four Seasons, the Beatles, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. So …. If you like to dance around your kitchen; make up your own moves as you go along; and while in exercise class, you feel like just dancing to the music …. Then come join us for the next “dance party”.

When? Friday, March 8

Time?    2:00-3:00

Why?  Dancing is good for your vascular and nervous systems.

It’s a great form of exercise.

A wonderful opportunity to socialize and be your crazy self!

Care Committee Corner

As American Heart Month comes to an end we want to remind you to take care of yourself all year long by taking care of your heart.  We want you to stay a part of Tierrasanta Village!

When reading about American Heart Month on the website of the National Institutes of Health, you’ll see these tips on taking action to protect your heart:  get enough quality sleep, eat better, stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight, and be more active. We have probably all heard these before, but reminders are good!  These general tips leave us wondering, “How much sleep?”, “What is good quality sleep?”, and “How much activity do I need?”.  Well, according to the National Institutes of Health, the answers are: 7 to 8 hours a night, sticking to a regular sleep schedule, and as far as being active, aiming for at least 150 minutes (2-1/2 hours) of physical activity per week.  That’s per week, not per day.  We can do that - just check the Village event calendar!  TVSD offers exercise clases of various intensities every day of the week.

There is more helpful information on the NIH website than can fit in this one “Corner”. The information here is from their fact sheet entitled, “Take Action for Your Heart: Get Started!”.  There are nine more heart-health-related fact sheets, including: “Self-Care Tips for Heart Health”, and “Stress Less for a Healthier Heart”.  To read more about American Heart Month, go to the National Institutes of Health website, www.nih.gov. Search American Heart Month on the website, and enjoy reading.

Also, just a reminder that the Care Committee maintains a collection of health care items that Villagers are welcome to borrow. The current equipment inventory includes:

Canes: 3 Knee Scooters: 2
Raised Toilet Seats: 3 Bedside commodes:4
Shower Chairs: 2 “Squatty Potty” Bathroom Aid: 1
Toilet Side Rails: 1 Walkers with seats: 5
Walkers without seats: 8 Wheelchairs: 4

Please contact member Joan McGeachy if you have a short-term need for any of the above items.

Also in February, the Care Committee hosted a successful Peer-to-Peer discussion about managing pain. One type of pain which was not discussed is worth a look—migraine headaches. If you have had a migraine, you know the pain can be excruciating. A WebMD article from February 2022 lists 11 home remedies which may help with migraine pain. They are:

- Ice packs on your forehead, scalp or neck.
- Over-the-counter pain medication.
- Caffeine.
- Relaxing in a dark, quiet room.
- Regular exercise. The article notes that exercising during a migraine will intensify pain, but a habit of regular exercise will release endorphins, which fight pain when migraines happen.
- Magnesium. This is found in leafy green vegetables. If you decide to take a magnesium supplement, the article advises that you check with your physician first.
- Sleep. A regular sleep schedule of 7 to 8 hours per night may help. Sleep as an aid to good health shows up time and time again in articles we’ve read.
- Yoga. Studies have shown that regular yoga sessions cut the number of migraine attacks, and make the migraines less severe when they do happen (All of our TVSD chair yoga participants are on the right track!).
- Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin. This is found in meat, cheese, fish, and chicken.
- Managing Your Triggers. Triggers may be from food or beverages (red wine, aged cheese, cured meats) or from one’s environment (bright lights, staying at high altitudes, and strong odors).

April is National Volunteer Month, so next month’s Care Committee Corner will feature the benefits of volunteering. Stay tuned!

Someone We Should Know
by Carol Lee

Tom Passios was born and raised in the small town of Lunenburg, Massachusetts. He has three brothers and one sister. Their mother was a college professor, and their dad was the principal of the local elementary school. Tom admitted with a grin that he had experienced ‘a few trips to the principal’s office’. When their father left to work for the Massachusetts Department of Education, the elementary school was named after him--the Thomas C. Passios Elementary School.

In 1973 Tom graduated from Boston College with a degree in math and economics. There were few good jobs in his field at the time, so he and a few college friends spent the next two years bartending and playing golf up and down the east coast. In 1975 he enrolled in William and Mary Graduate Business School and in 1977 graduated with an MBA. His business career included the Sheraton Corporation for nine years, moving all over the country, first as an Assistant Controller in French Lick, Indiana, Larry Bird territory. Then, he was transferred to San Diego, where he met Kathy, his future wife. After a couple of other moves with Sheraton, Tom became the Area Controller for all of the Sheraton properties in the Los Angeles area. In 1986 Tom left Sheraton and joined Westgroup Inc., a Los Angeles based real estate development company, as their CFO. The company split in half in 1989 and Tom became a partner, CFO and COO of the Chadmar Group developing residential real estate throughout California, including the Meadows Del Mar in Del Mar, now the Grand Del Mar.

Tom and Kathy have been together since 1978. Kathy had three children and was one of the original owners in Tierrasanta. It took a while but they were finally married in 2000. When they did decide, the date was set for April Fools’ Day, and the invitation read: “You are invited to come and see Hell freeze over!” as no one believed it would finally happen. Tom and Kathy now have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. “The health and wellbeing of our family is everything to me,” Tom said.

In 2000, Kathy’s mom became ill. So Kathy could be close to her mom, they moved from L.A. to Kathy’s home in Tierrasanta. Tom and Kathy had the home renovated and moved in in 2001. Unfortunately, Kathy’s mom died shortly thereafter. Kathy herself was diagnosed with stage 4 lung and brain cancer in 2010 and had a very rough two years, pushing through it all with the help of Tom, and she has now been in remission for over five years. Kathy’s oncologists say that she is a medical miracle. Tom continues to manage Kathy’s medical care as well as being chief cook, bottle washer and chauffeur and happy to do it.

One of Kathy’s daughters lives in San Diego and is involved in crafts. Kathy went up to help her at the Tierrasanta Craft Fair, walked around and discovered our TVSD table. She joined our Village first; then, Tom looked at our calendar, saw golf, and joined. He’s a sports nut and totally enjoys the Wednesday golf games with the guys from the Village. Kathy enjoyed the chocolate factory trip, and she plays Bunko. Together they have gone to the puzzle night last year and the trip to the Bernardo Winery.

Kathy loves to do water aerobics, and the couple goes to Maui every year. Six times through the years they have taken the whole family to Maui; it’s very special to get them all in one place to celebrate. Until Tom’s mom passed in 2014, Tom and Kathy visited Massachusetts every year. The past two summers they have vacationed on Cape Cod, and last summer they hosted a family reunion with 24 members of the Passios clan. They have gone on many Vikings Cruises in Europe and love the old-world charm. Tom bakes two of his mom’s favorite recipes, baclava and tiropita, which have been enjoyed at their Neighborhood Group get-together. They look forward to becoming involved in many more TVSD activities.

At the end of our conversation, Tom told me, “The most important thing in his life is family and friends, especially if you are fortunate enough to have the wherewithal to be sure that everyone has a happy, rewarding life.”

"This is Your Life 2.0"
March 22nd 1-2:30 p.m.

We all need a little help making sure our last wishes are known and our administrator has access to important documents. Although you may have updated your legal documents such as a will and trust, what about the things not covered by them?

The Care Committee is updating a project which helps you identify important information that would need to be known if you were not able to access it yourself. (What is the password for your email? What is the account number for you cable company? Where do you store your tax documents?)

Several  years ago, a group of Villagers joined a member-to-member project, where lists of topics were shared, resulting in collection of documents into a binder that will help your loved ones easily find the information they will need.

Since that time, we have added new members who have expressed interest in knowing more about this project, as well as others who want to re-visit/complete what they started.

The Care Committee has scheduled an informational session, which we are calling, “This is your Life 2.0”.  We invite members to attend an informational session at the Seventh Day Church on Friday, March 29, 2024, from 1:00-2:30. The meeting will begin with an overview of the project, after which the group will be divided into those new to the process, and those who just want a re-boot!.

Please remember to register for this event.

Looking Ahead: Volunteer Appreciation Brunch

Save the Date: Friday, April 12

April is National Volunteer Month and we are going to celebrate this volunteer theme on Friday, April 12, with a brunch to honor our Village Volunteers.

Our Village is blessed to have a long list of committed volunteers who have taken leadership roles and who serve on our core teams and committees. And, we have other volunteers who step up when we need lots of individual help, such as stuffing envelopes for a big mail-out, making a restaurant reservation for Lunch Bunch or SNAP, decorating tables, setting up and cleaning up for a potluck. These are just a few of the several ways that our members volunteer. Many of you volunteer your time and talents through the Time Bank and for that we are appreciative that so many skills are shared. So, we want to honor and recognize all of YOU who have put forth time and effort in keeping our Village sustained and healthy day after day and month after month.

Please join us on April 12th to enjoy a brunch, applaud our volunteers, and have fun with some door prizes! We want to thank you for all that you do. Your time, talent, and treasure are most appreciated!
