APRIL 2024 NEWSLETTER

A Message from the Board President

March is past and April is here! We are marching happily into Spring. I believe we share a bit of excitement to have the wet, cold winter behind us. March was another busy month for the TVSD family. April promises to be more of the same.

Would you agree our Annual Meeting on March 4th was a highlight? I hope so. It was well attended, and a good time was had by all. How about those Village Vocals? We hope our members found the meeting informative, as well.

We acquired an Automated External Defibrillator (try spelling that without looking it up!) (AED). Twenty one members attended a two hour CPR/AED training on March 4. We are better prepared now, but we hope the need to use this never occurs.

Our annual St. Patrick’s Potluck luncheon on March 15 was a big hit. A group of eleven members wrote thank you notes to over 110 veterans who will go to Washington D.C. with the Honor Flight Program. Our Care & Wellness Committee brought life back into the important educational program entitled “This is Your Life 2.0”. It is good to see we are experiencing some new attendance records at our exercise classes.

TVSD members will be afforded the opportunity on April 4 to enjoy a tour of Spanish Village in Balboa Park. We will be hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Brunch on April 12. We have so many volunteers and we appreciate them all.

I mention a few of our activities and events as a way of reminding ourselves how effective we are at following through on our mission. We are offering a wide variety of opportunities: educational, emotional and physical. I encourage everyone to maximize the benefit of your membership: get involved and participate.

Amongst all of our busyness, let’s be sure to take some time to enjoy the beautiful spring! This quote by American author, Anne Lamott offers good advice:

“I am going to try to pay attention to the spring. I am going to look around at all the flowers, and look up at the hectic trees. I am going to close my eyes and listen.”

St. Patty's Day Potluck

It was another great event at this year's potluck! Thanks to member Mike Rigdon for these wonderful photos

Volunteer Appreciation Brunch
Friday, April 12

April is National Volunteer Month and we are going to celebrate this volunteer theme on Friday, April 12, with a brunch to honor our Village Volunteers.

Our Village is blessed to have a long list of committed volunteers who have taken leadership roles and who serve on our core teams and committees. And, we have other volunteers who step up when we need lots of individual help, such as stuffing envelopes for a big mail-out, making a restaurant reservation for Lunch Bunch or SNAP, decorating tables, setting up and cleaning up for a potluck. These are just a few of the several ways that our members volunteer. Many of you volunteer your time and talents through the Time Bank and for that we are appreciative that so many skills are shared. So, we want to honor and recognize all of YOU who have put forth time and effort in keeping our Village sustained and healthy day after day and month after month.

Please join us on April 12th to enjoy a brunch, applaud our volunteers, and have fun with some door prizes! We want to thank you for all that you do. Your time, talent, and treasure are most appreciated! Please register on or before 4/9.

Marilyn Bente, TVSD Past President

Next Member Meeting

Don't miss the next Member Meeting on Monday April 1st at 3 p.m. Our Guest Speaker will be Brandon Harding, the Director of Lifelong Learning for Oasis. This meeting is available in person or via Zoom. Register now if you are able to attend.

Gifts From the Heart

These beautiful quilts created by Marilyn Millikan were donated to Jewish Family Service for needy families they serve. Other Gifts from the Heart from TVSD were 4 knitted afghans from Carol Lee.

If you like to do handmade work, consider sharing it with the needy. Sharing our talents with gifts from our hearts is a truly precious, practical, and uplifting act.

Any time you have a useful item ready, contact member Carol Lee (cleeameritech@gmail.com) and she will arrange to pick it up. Simple as that!

Care Committee Corner

Did you know that volunteering is good for your health?  Well, it is!  And there is no better time than April—National Volunteer Month*— to tell you about the health benefits of volunteering.  To all of you who volunteer in our community, for Tierrasanta Village and other wonderful groups, a big thank you!  According to the Mayo Clinic, in their article from August 1, 2023, here is how your health is improving because you volunteer:

1. Volunteering improves physical and mental health.  “Volunteer activities keep people moving and thinking at the same time.  Research has found that volunteering among adults, age 60 and over, provided benefits to physical and mental health.  Volunteers report better physical health than non-volunteers.  Research has also shown that volunteering leads to lower rates of depression and anxiety, especially for people 65 and older…..By spending time in service to others, volunteers report feeling a sense of meaning and appreciation, both given and received, which can have a stress-reducing effect.”

2. Volunteering provides a sense of purpose and teaches valuable skills.  “The work that volunteers provide is essential to everyday activities, giving volunteers a sense of purpose, especially when giving their time and talent in the areas they find meaningful.  Older volunteers experience greater increases in life satisfaction and self-esteem.”

3.   It nurtures new and existing relationships.  “Volunteering increases social interaction and       helps build a support system based on common interests.  One of the best ways to make        new friends and strengthen existing relationships is to participate in a shared activity.  In       many cases, volunteers have diverse backgrounds, which helps expand their social skills       with others.”

Happy April, and happy volunteering!

Someone We Should Know
by Mike Sisson and Carol Lee

“Most people call me Mike. I was born and spent my childhood in the Normal Heights neighborhood of San Diego. Growing up, I loved working on cars—I was a hot rod nut! Schooling in that part of town was at Adams Elementary, Woodrow Wilson Junior High, and Hoover High School. “Mom, Dad, and sister Karen comprised the rest of my family. During WWII, Dad worked in the defense industry at Convair and Ryan Aerospace. He couldn’t qualify for the military because of health issues. Mom had been an elementary school teacher, and then she was a stay-at-home mom.”

Mike spent three semesters at City College, transferring after that to San Diego State University. My experience with cars led to a part-time job in car maintenance at SDSU, which helped with my college expenses. The latter was interrupted by a 6-month active-duty tour with the National Guard.  “I finished a BA in 1967, majoring in math and minoring in industrial arts. I acquired a teaching credential in 1968 and in 1969 began a thirty-year teaching job at Bonita Vista High School. During that period, I taught math, metal shop, electricity, photography, graphic art, and adult classes in graphic reproduction. The kids were great, and I was lucky to teach in that pre-cell phone era.”

Mike remains very close to his sister Karen. She resides in a retirement community in Highland, California, needing some care for a few memory problems brought on by chemotherapy treatment to cure her Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Long time Village member Laurie Brown introduced Mike to Village friends after the two met at the First United Methodist Church. Mike really likes the Village concept and feels that enlightened governments would have sponsored such communities, saving money and helping citizens to be healthier as they age.

Leading up to Mike’s piano playing for our Village Vocals--Mike’s dad had taken classical piano lessons for about five years as a child, but he liked the emerging Jazz genre. At 18, he had left home and started a garage band with three buddies, making a living touring mining camps in Minnesota and Idaho, playing for dances all during the Depression. When Mike and Karen were old enough, their dad worked at regaining his own skills and then began teaching them to play the piano. Mom was a big help, too, since she could read music and had been a choir director. Mike ‘wasn’t so hot in the reading music category’, but he had his mom’s good ear for music. VV and TVSD are very happy that he shares those rare playing by ear skills with us! Mike is a relatively new member of TVSD. He and Laurie have gone to many of our social activities and both of them add so much to our Village Vocals. Thank you!

Mike’s words to live by-- “I like to think that I treat others without prejudice or judgement.  That's at least my intention.”
