KIWANIS CLUB OF TIERRASANTA CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT – JUNE 22, 2019

Cornhole Tournament, 2019

TVSD was represented at the Cornhole Tournament, with Marilyn Bente as the Team Captain and the team comprised of Ann Lasdon and Fran & Greg Zweibel.  Even though they didn’t make it to the finals they had a great time and enjoyed the comradery of their Tierrasanta neighbors and friends.

This event was a fundraiser and TVSD will receive donations from the Kiwanis as a result.  Next year we hope to see more of our Villagers support Team TVSD and our community!

Vital Aging Conference attended by TVSD Members

TVSD was represented at the Vital Aging 2019 conference entitled Live Well to Age Well on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at the San Diego Convention Center by Art and Bradlyn Mulvey and Rhoda Keegan.

Conference attendees chose to attend two one-hour sessions: three experiential classes: the Feeling Fit Club, Aging Well with Tai Chi, and Line Dancing. Those who wanted to broaden knowledge had a choice of ten workshops on brain health, safety, caregiving, fitness & nutrition.

The keynote speaker was Marilu Henner, a New York Times best selling author, actress, and a long-time advocate for healthier living. She advocated strategies for keeping active and living life with a resilient spirit.

Be adaptable and flexible. Attitude is everything; if things aren’t going as anticipated, it is beneficial to develop and adapt to another plan.

Marilu advocated a plant-based diet to “eat the food that loves you” and to move/exercise for “motion is the lotion” that lubricates the joints. “If you wear out your body, where are you going to live?”

According to Marilu, if you don’t “fall in love with stress, it will kill you.”  Everyday, do something small that makes you happy and makes you feel better. You have to “find the juice” that decreases stress.

Overall, the conference was well worth the time to attend; it was full of valuable information that helps us to live well in order to age well.

Care Committee Updates

Living Healthy

VILLAGER TO VILLAGER:
Share your Experience!
Each month this website and the Vibes provide information gathered by the Care Committee to help members deal with health-related issues.  There are two sources of information on this subject: external and internal.  External sources include reputable articles on a subject related to healthcare, and internal sources are experiences that members have lived through dealing with healthcare issues.  So, I am asking each member of TVSD that if they have experiences that could be useful for dissemination to other villagers in our community, please write them up and send them to me:  Marc Narkus-Kramer

Chronic Pain Workshop

TVSD has received a request to collaborate with AIS to host a series of six workshops for Chronic Pain starting on September 10, 2019.

We want to know if our membership is interested in participating in this free program. The workshops are held for 21/2 hours, once a week for six consecutive weeks. The building curriculum covers how to manage chronic pain, exercises, use of medications, communication and nutrition. The workshop curriculum is evidence-based and was originally developed at Stanford University. At least 10 participants are needed to start the workshop so let Missy know if you are interested so we can make this series of workshops happen.

Presidential Quotes

Theodore Roosevelt’s, which is still true today:   When they call the roll in the Senate, the senators do not know whether to answer “present” or “not guilty.”

LBJ:  “Did you ever think making a speech on economics is a like pissing down your leg?  It seems hot to you, but it never does to anyone else.”

The Village Funnies archives have expired due to lack of interest.

After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde  declared, 'Well,  then, maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator  and get a pair of alligator shoes  for free!'

The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile,  'Well, little  lady, why don't you go give it a try?'

The  blonde headed off to the  swamp, determined to  catch an alligator.

Later in the  day, the  shopkeeper was driving home, and spotted the young woman  standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand.

He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her.
With lightning reflexes, the blond took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery  bank.

Nearby were 7 more dead gators all lying  belly up. The shopkeeper watched in amazement as the  blond struggled with the gator.
Then, rolling  her eyes, she screamed in frustration......

”Sonuvabitch!! THIS ONE'S BAREFOOT, TOO!”

Woodrow Wilson:  “I have long enjoyed the friendship and companionship of Republicans because I am by instinct a teacher and I would like to teach them something.”

Herbert Hoover:  “Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the National Debt.”

Harry Truman:  “My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician.  And to tell the truth, there’s not much difference.”

JFK:  “Do you realize the responsibility I carry?  I’m the only person standing between Richard Nixon and the White House.”
